Discover the 10 Shocking Spots Where Mould is Hiding in Your Home Right Now!

As we age, our health becomes more of a priority, and maintaining a clean and safe living environment is crucial. One sneaky culprit that can undermine our well-being is mould. It's not just an unsightly nuisance; it can also cause health issues and significant damage to our homes. But mould is a master of disguise, often lurking in places we least expect. Today, we're uncovering the top ten shocking spots where mould might be hiding in your home right now!

1. Underfoot and Overlooked: Floors and Carpets
You might be surprised to learn that mould can grow beneath your feet. It can thrive on and under wood or laminate floors, causing discolouration and damage. Carpets and rugs are also prime real estate for mould, especially if they become damp and aren't dried properly. Regularly inspect and clean under rugs, and consider professional help if you suspect mould beneath your flooring.

2. Hidden in Plain Sight: Water Pipes
Mould requires moisture to grow, and your home's water pipes can be a source of that moisture. It can sneak into your water system and even grow inside water softeners or filtration systems. If you notice a musty smell when you turn on the tap, it might be time to investigate and clean your plumbing fixtures with a mixture of vinegar and baking soda.

3. Airborne Invaders: Vents and Ducts
Your HVAC system's ducts can become a breeding ground for mould, spreading spores throughout your home every time the system kicks on. Vents leading outside can also harbor mould due to exposure to humidity. Cleaning these areas can often be done with bleach and a HEPA filter vacuum, but don't hesitate to call in professionals if the problem persists.

4. Up the Chimney: Chimneys and Fireplaces
Chimneys and fireplaces are cozy, but they can also be cozy for mould if there's a leak or the waterproofing has failed. Regular inspections and professional cleaning can prevent mould from taking hold in these warm, moist environments.

5. Between the Pages: Books
For book lovers, the thought of mouldy books is heartbreaking. High humidity can turn your library into a mould feast. If you spot fuzzy growth or stains on your books, it's time to act. Cleaning mouldy books is delicate work, and prevention is key—keep humidity levels in check to protect your collection.

6. Behind the Scenes: Wallpaper
Wallpaper can hide mould growth between the walls and the paper itself. Look for discolouration, damp spots, or peeling as signs of mould. Removing and replacing wallpaper may be necessary to address the issue.

7. Closet Catastrophes: Closets
Packed closets with limited airflow are prime spots for mould. If your clothes or shoes have a musty smell, it's time to declutter and clean. Wash affected items in hot water with bleach or sanitiser and address the humidity in your closet to prevent future growth.

8. Green but Not Clean: Houseplants
Houseplants add life to your home, but overwatering or poor drainage can lead to mould growth in the soil. Regularly check your plants and address any mould by scraping it off or replacing the soil.

9. Appliance Alert: Washing Machines and Dishwashers
The warm, moist environments of washing machines and dishwashers are perfect for mould. Check behind seals and gaskets and clean with bleach and hot water. Running a hot cycle can help eliminate any lingering spores.

10. Out of Sight: Insulation
Insulation is often out of sight, but it shouldn't be out of mind. Mould can thrive on insulation materials, so inspect your attic, basement, and crawl spaces regularly. If you find mould, you'll need to remove and replace the insulation and address the underlying moisture issue.

Mould can be a formidable foe, but with vigilance and regular home maintenance, you can keep it at bay. Remember, if you're ever unsure about tackling mould yourself, it's always best to consult with professionals. They can ensure that the mould is removed safely and effectively, protecting both your health and your home.

In a house I lived in nearly 40 years ago had mould which was hard to get rid off and a big reason we moved.

I made sure our next house was airy and light.

I have a house now where the air circulates well.

I open windows and doors as much as I can.

I believe also a big thing is to make sure your home is kept clean, dusted well and no clutter.
