A lot of travellers have experienced it at one point–the age-old dilemma of deciding to book your flights early or wait in the hope of getting a cheaper deal.

But in these tought times, any dollar saved goes a long way! That’s why a few extra dollars in the pocket may just be the motivation you need to jump on that next adventure.

Introducing: Google Flights!


This new feature is for thrifty travellers looking for the lowest fares.

It is based on ‘reliable trend data’, providing useful insights on whether prices are overblown or at a discount.

'For example, these insights could tell you that the cheapest time to book similar trips is usually two months before departure, and you're currently in that sweet spot,' Google explained.

'Or you might learn that prices have usually dropped closer to takeoff, so you decide to wait before booking.'

'Either way, you can make that decision with a greater sense of confidence.'


To add, Google also offers helpful email notifications for specific tickets–provided you are signed up with Google. This way, if prices fall, you’ll be in the know and ready to go. And if you’re lucky, you may even stumble upon a ‘price guarantee’ badge on your deal.

In these cases, Google will monitor the price of your purchased flight every day before takeoff. If the price drops, Google will pay you the difference through Google Pay.

However, this Price Guarantee Program is currently part of a pilot program only available on select one-way and round-trip flights that depart from the United States and are booked within Google Flights. You can read more about the program here!

If you’re interested in trying the new tool, here’s what you’ll need to do:

• Search for ‘Google Flights’ on your search bar
• Once you click it, you’ll be taken to a flight search bar
• Choose your destination, flight times, and baggage requirements
• Tap ‘Search’
• To see more information on average ticket prices, click ‘View price history’
• To get email notifications on your Google account, click ‘Track prices’ which can be located just below the search bar

Google said: 'Outside of these tools, we've gathered other information to help you travel on a budget.'

'Last year, we shared based on historical pricing trends on Google Flights.

'We ran the numbers again with the latest data, and most of the tips from 2022 still hold true: Taking a layover or avoiding weekend departures are among the best ways to save on your next flight booking.'

Moreover, since Christmas is coming up, Google noted that you're most likely to find deals around early October for trips starting mid-December. The typical low-price range will be 54-78 days before your departure.

A huge change this year is that average prices tend to be lowest 71 days before departure compared to insights from 2022 which showed average prices were at their lowest 22 days before departure.
