Sonni's cause of death has remained confidential.

The news of his passing was delivered via a poignant post by the band on several online platforms. The short but heartfelt message read, '#JackSonni Rest In Peace #DireStraits.'

Dire Straits fans took to social media to express their profound grief at the loss of the musician. One touched fan articulated, 'Rest in peace Jack Sonni #DireStraits, a h*ll of a musician'.

‘Part of the greatest era of Dire Straits was Jack, and he was a great guitarist himself,’ another fan wrote.

A third fan posted, ‘Safe travels, Jack, the notes will remain immortal.’

‘He left his mark, style and personality during his time with Dire Straits. Rest in peace, your guitar will never stop playing!’ A fourth user exclaimed.

Born in Indiana, Pennsylvania, Sonni's journey with Dire Straits began while he was working at Rudy's Music Stop in the 1970s in New York City. This quirky encounter led him to bond with the cofounders of Dire Straits, David and Mark Knopfler.

Sonni graced the historic Live Aid Concert in 1985 alongside the band, stirring the crowd with unforgettable tunes.

After his exit from Dire Straits in 1995, he contributed to a series of works from other musicians before bidding goodbye to his professional musical career in 1988.

Sonni was relegated to start a second career as a marketing executive, working with Seymour Duncan, Rivera Guitar Amplifiers and several digital technology production companies.

In 2006, he ventured into writing, moving to San Jose del Cabo and California.

With his stint as the writer-in-residence and House Manager at the Noepe Center for Literary Arts on Martha's Vineyard, Sonni's affinity with words leads him back to his other lifelong love, music. He performed frequently with his band, The Leisure Class.

The sense of loss is resonant in the heartfelt messages from fans worldwide, with expressions of love and condolences flooding social media platforms.
