Did you know your iPhone has a feature that decodes confusing laundry symbols?

Laundry day can be frustrating enough without having to decipher the cryptic symbols on clothing tags.

What does that tiny little iron mean? Or the dots in the bucket? It's enough to make your head spin in a way that would put washing machines to shame!

Well, those days of wondering are coming to an end for iPhone users excited about a ‘mind-blowing’ camera feature that can interpret laundry symbols on clothing labels.

Brad Canning, a resident of Melbourne, shared a video demonstrating how the smartphone's Camera app can quickly assist in understanding washing or ironing instructions.

‘This is going to blow your mind,’ Brad shared.

‘So you know all these crazy symbols on the inside of our clothes? Let me show you a little trick.’

To read laundry symbols, just snap a photo of the tag.

‘This iPhone hack is a game changer, to use this, you do need an iPhone SE or later and be on IOS16 or IOS17,’ Brad continued.

‘Grab your phone, open up your camera and then you’re going to want to take a photo, nice and close.’

In the Photos app, either swipe upwards on the photo or tap the small washing machine icon.

‘Right down the bottom, you’ll see a little washing machine icon,’ he said.

‘If you press that, you’ll see “Look Up Laundry Care”. When you press that, the results will come up, which will show you exactly what they mean.’

The laundry symbols will appear with an explanation of their meanings.

‘This is honestly so good,’ Brad expressed.

The camera feature can also be used for other items.

‘You can use this feature to identify plants, dog breeds, cat breeds, statues, artworks, books... a lot of things,’ he said.

‘Use this next time you need to know a plant name.’

The new iPhone feature was released in September amid the update of Apple’s iOS operation system.

Many pointed out Google Lens has been offering the same feature on Android devices for years, to which Brad responded: ‘It's been around for a while, but I'm just bringing it to people's attention who might not have known it's there.’

His video has been viewed more than 315,000 times–-with many saying they never knew the feature existed.

‘OK, this is actually a game changer,’ one wrote.

‘Since when?! It’s not a mystery anymore—thank you,’ added another.

‘How on earth did we ever survive a day before smartphones? I’m kidding, but also, how?’ commented a third.

‘Bloody genius!’ said a fourth.
