Every so often, we bear witness to audacious road behaviours that leave us shaking our heads in disbelief.
One such instance unfolded in a row of cars patiently awaiting their turn at a set of traffic lights for the school pick-up line.
Recent dashcam footage captured in Jordan Springs, Sydney, showed a Ford driver's amusingly ironic 'reverse of shame'.
An impatient black Ford SUV driver decided to disregard traffic rules and decorum by driving down the wrong side of the road, attempting to overtake the line of cars.
The black Ford's reckless move was abruptly halted by Gareth, the dashcam-owner, who was poised to merge into traffic, driving in the correct direction.
'Entitled driver got mad at me when I wouldn't back up and let him continue overtaking multiple cars at once, on the wrong side of the road, over double white lines, in a school zone!' Gareth said.
'I was so surprised to see him there I wasn’t sure what to do for a moment.'
'Then he started reversing, so I just decided to follow him—I never beeped my horn, flashed my lights, revved my engine or anything like that.'
During this 'reverse of shame', which ended at a Woolworths loading dock, the Ford driver nearly collided with two other cars.
The driver then raised his middle finger towards Gareth.
'I’m usually in that queue myself—I’m a dad, and two of my kids attend the school—and I see people like this guy do st***d things like this here every day,' Gareth added.
While Gareth hasn't reported the incident to the police yet, other who have seen the footage urged him to do so.
He also hoped that the humiliation of this incident will be enough for the driver to be 'more patient or find a different way around' in the future.
Across the country, drivers have hailed Gareth's responsive action, dubbing him a 'hero'.
'This is the best thing I’ve seen in a long time. Well done,' one said.
While another replied: 'Ah, nothing quite like a good ol’ reverse of shame.'
In a separate incident under investigation by the police, a car was caught driving in the wrong direction on a busy Australian road which triggered fears of a potential collision and shocking other motorists.
A spokesperson from the New South Wales Police pointed out that although reports of such incidents are relatively 'rare', these cases are not 'uncommon'.
'Some of these incidents can be attributed to driver error, a medical condition, changes in road signage,' the spokesperson explained.
'The offence of “not keep left of median strip – motor vehicle” carries a penalty of $387 and three demerit points.'
