Dame Edna Everage star faces unexpected complications after hip replacement surgery

Beloved Australian comedian Barry Humphries has been forced to return to the hospital due to complications following a recent hip replacement surgery.

This comes after the performer had only just been discharged after breaking his hip in March.

Comedian and stage performer Barry Humphries, best known for his alter-ego Dame Edna Everage, is back in a Sydney hospital following health complications following a hip replacement.

The 89-year-old star had surgery on his hip last month at Sydney’s St Vincent Hospital after suffering a fall in February. According to reports, Mr Humphries was forced to undergo the procedure after tripping on a rug at home.

Following the incident, the entertainer was given a titanium hip. Despite this, he later joked that he could now be called ‘Bionic Bazza’.

According to reports at the time, Mr Humphries said that he’d been in ‘agony’ after the accident and was taking ‘very painful’ physical rehabilitation sessions with a physiotherapist.

‘It was the most ridiculous thing, like all domestic incidents are. I was reaching for a book, my foot got caught on a rug or something, and down I went,’ he revealed.

However, the star shared that he would have to ‘get back on his feet’ because he intends to tour his one-man show later this year.

‘I sit a lot in the show, and there’s a bit of pacing... I don’t think it’s going to be a problem, but I do have to get on with my physio,’ he explained.

Peter Ford, Entertainment Editor at Sunrise, broke the news Wednesday morning. He assured Mr Humphries’ supporters that the star ‘will not give up easily’ and that he will be ‘back on stage’ before the end of this year.

‘Whether that’s a realistic goal, I don’t know…I am told that Barry’s health has worsened in the last week,’ Mr Ford stated.

However, Mr Ford claimed that Mr Humphries ‘certainly intends to keep on fighting’.

It was also revealed that the star’s health ‘took a turn’ this week.

‘I have spoken to a few people close to Barry in the last couple of hours,’ Richard Wilkins, Nine’s Entertainment Editor, admitted.

‘One of his very close friends and colleagues said that he spoke to him a couple of days ago and that he was in good spirits and in good shape. However, it appears that in the last little while, Barry has taken a turn for the worst and is back in the hospital,’ he explained.

‘All we can do is cross our fingers,’ Mr Wilkins added.

His friends and family are with him while he is in the eastern suburbs hospital. His family also shared that the star would like to thank ‘everybody for the support and good wishes he has received’.

In a statement, they shared that Mr Humphries wanted to ‘thank the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff at St Vincent’s Hospital’.

His wife, Lizzie Spender, said that the comedian was ‘doing fine’.

Mr Humphries’ most famous creation, Mrs Edna Everage, is one of the most iconic Aussie characters ever. The character enabled the comedian to have an outlet for his sharp wit and impeccable ad-lib skills while performing. His alter-ego is so renowned that it was even dubbed a Dame by Prime Minister Gough Whitlam.

Dame Edna made a successful transition from stage to TV without losing popularity in either genre, earning the star a bigger audience pool and millions of fans internationally.

Such a funny and entertaining man.

I think it's worst than they were expecting, his son and estranged daughter has rushed to his side. His wife hasn't left his side and they family were told that they should let those who needed to know that they should head to his side.

Unfortunately it's not looking good.

Gosh this is after hip surgery and it was hip surgery that was the cause of Renee Gaynors death recently.

My 🙏 are with Mr Humphries and his family

Several years ago I was sent to a specialist because of excruciating pain in a shoulder....he recommended a replacement.....I said "NO Way" and had dry needling treatment. All the pain had gone after three visits....I am VERY wary of any sort of surgery of this kind, I have too many friends who are on their second and third replacement.

A naturally talented funny entertainer and we are extremely lucky that he is an Australian. I hope he recovers soon. However, all the news stating that friends and family members are travelling overseas to Australia to be by his bedside I think this over-k*ll. Surely this can not be true. Why would any person of any age expect people to rush to another country that because they are in hospital. Really doesn't make any sense to expect people, even family members to rush all over the world just because someone is in hospital.

One's passing happens to all of us and there is not a thing you nor I can do anything to prevent it from happening. It's gonna happen people, so expect it.
