Streetwear and urban fashion have taken the world by storm, with popular brands like Supreme, Off-White, and Culture Kings leading.
However, while these stylish wearables often captivate the market with their cutting-edge aesthetics, they are not immune to occasional design flaws.
From material issues to functional drawbacks, even the most sought-after items can sometimes fall short of expectations.
Culture Kings has issued an urgent recall for its Sneaker Basel Magnetic Levitation Sneaker Displays due to safety concerns that the product could cause injuries or even death.
On 9 July, Product Safety Australia issued the recall, which affected displays sold domestically and internationally, including online.
Customers who purchased display models CXF-22 and CXF-24B sold between 15 July 2020 and 4 January 2023 should keep the magnets at least 16 cm apart at all times and should not try to separate them if they come together.
‘If pulled apart, broken pieces may eject with force,’ the recall stated.
The display featured lights and magnets designed to levitate sneakers using additional magnets in the shoes' heels.
However, the magnets used in the sneaker display can strongly attract one another. According to the regulator, they can ‘forcefully attract, break, splinter, and emit sparks if they come together’.
Additionally, if two or more of these strong magnets are ingested by accident or on purpose, they can attract each other inside the digestive tract.
‘When two or more high-powered magnets are swallowed...the ingested magnets can attract each other and become lodged in the digestive system,’ it continued.
This attraction can cause severe complications such as intestinal perforations, twisting, or blockages, which may result in serious infections or even be fatal.
Incidents of such injuries have been reported in Australia and the United States.
For a full refund, customers can return their Culture Kings Sneaker Basel Magnetic Levitation Sneaker Displays or contact the company on 1300 254 647 (9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday) or via email at [email protected].
Similarly, a projector mount sold at JB Hi-Fi stores nationwide has been recalled due to safety issues.
The mount does not have a secondary locking mechanism, which could cause the adjustable arm to drop if adjustments are attempted without removing the projector first. More details are available here.
