Scams are not just a financial burden; they can also be costly to the emotional well-being of victims and their families. Not only do scams leave victims feeling unsafe, but they could also lead to the development of psychological symptoms such as depression and anxiety.
In some cases, victims can be so traumatised that they fear speaking out publicly, compounding feelings of hopelessness and shame. This is why it’s important to be compassionate to people who experienced getting scammed.
But as unfortunate as it sounds, scams have become rampant in today’s society. But it's particularly disheartening when they target unsuspecting and vulnerable people, especially those desperate to expand their families.
One couple, known for their unique 37-year age gap, has recently fallen victim to a scam that cost them over $13,000 and dashed their hopes of expanding their family.
Quran McCain, the 25-year-old husband, and his 62-year-old wife Cheryl McGregor, hail from the state of Georgia in the US.
Last year, they embarked on their surrogacy journey to become parents. But the grandmother of 17 and her husband were left heartbroken when their surrogate allegedly backed out as their surrogate, causing them immense emotional pain and financial losses.
The unnamed surrogate had allegedly been breaching the contract by having unprotected sex with her partner while the egg was fertilised, claimed the couple.
‘At the moment, it does feel like people are reaching out to us for the wrong reasons,’ Quran said in an interview with reporters.
‘We're completely broke. We don't get paid for our content [referring to the couple’s ‘job’ as social media content creators]. And then the surrogate goes and bleeds us dry,’ he continued.
Quran explained: ‘We had paid for her food and travel and even gave her money for her and her family to enjoy Christmas.’
The man also added that he and his wife wanted the surrogate to be happy because she was giving them ‘the gift [they’ve] always wanted’.
‘It just feels like we’re always getting screwed over.’
But despite the setback, the couple admitted that they haven’t given up on starting a family. They also shared they’ve already decided on a baby name.
‘We’re extremely hurt, but we’re going to keep going. We still want a… baby,’ Quran stated.
The couple also shared the devastating news to their followers on social media.
‘Couldn’t you adopt? Just a thought,’ one social media user said.
‘It’s all going to get better soon, just don’t give up,’ another stated.
‘Sincere good wishes finding a suitable surrogate, make them sign a legal contract,’ someone else suggested.
Quran first met Cheryl in 2012 when he was just 15. He worked in a fast food restaurant managed by Cheryl’s son, Chris. However, romantic feelings didn’t blossom until much later.
Despite Quran being younger than one of Cheryl's own children, the couple said they feel an undeniable connection, proving that love knows no age boundaries.
