Couple finds “once-in-a-lifetime” discovery in their plate of seafood

Imagine you’re in the middle of dinner, eating seafood with your partner in a seaside restaurant, when you suddenly discover something on your plate that is worth way more than the bill. Are you going to keep it or sell it for a fortune?

That’s what happened to this one couple from New Jersey.

It was the day of their anniversary, so Maria and Michael Spressler decided to have a simple and intimate dinner at their favourite restaurant – The Lobster House in Cape May.

As always, Michael orders his usual appetizer, a dozen clams on a half shell. So the two shared the plateful of clams over light conversation.

Michael was down on his twelfth clam when he noticed that the flesh felt heavy on his fork. But since he was too lost in their conversations, he paid no mind and ate it. When he started chewing, he thought he “broke one of his teeth” because of how hard the object in his mouth is.

After spitting it out, he and his wife were shocked to see that he actually bit into a small, round object in his seafood. Upon closer inspection, it was actually a pearl.

“He’s eaten dozens and dozens of clams and we’ve never found anything like that,” said Maria. “It was pretty exciting.”

The couple has been dining at the restaurant since 1987, and nothing like this had ever happened to them before. According to Maria and Michael, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The pearl was measured to be around 8.8 millimetres and was estimated to be worth thousands of dollars. However, the couple has no plans on selling it.

“It's a beautiful remembrance of that day,” said Maria, so she’s considering having the pearl made into a piece of jewellery instead.

The management behind the restaurant was also delighted to hear the good news from the couple. They shared their sentiments and admitted the absolute shock of finding something so rare and valuable, and on their anniversary too.
