Could you be at risk? Listeria scare prompts mushroom recall!

Heads up, valued members of the Seniors Discount Club! It's time to delve into your fridge and give those veggies a once-over.

Food Standards Australia recently alerted the recall of Enoki Mushrooms, distributed by Concordia Traders (Aust) Pty Ltd, due to an incorrect use-by date on the packaging.

Enoki mushrooms, originally from Japan, are not just delicious but are also low in calories and rich in vitamins B and D!

Yet, even these nutritional powerhouses can fall prey to the nasty listeria.

This minor misprint has led to major concerns about the possible manifestation of a disease-causing bacteria.

The recall has been issued due to an increased risk of a very unwelcome addition—listeria.

The affected mushroom packets from China were distributed in Asian grocery stores around Victoria, with a use-by date of 20/07/2023.

Listeria monocytogenes can lead to listeriosis—a rare but serious disease with a mortality rate of 20-30%. Listeria's ability to survive at refrigerated temperatures makes them an unusual threat in our fridges.

Now, while many associate listeria with lettuce or deli meats, it's important to remember that it's a pest that isn't picky about its place of residence.

Seniors, pregnant women, newborns, unborn babies, and the immunocompromised are particularly susceptible.

Wondering how to pick fresh mushrooms the next time you're at the grocery store? Here's a quick guide. Fresh mushrooms have a firm texture, an even colour, and a pleasant aroma.

If you notice any discoloration, slime, or a foul smell, it's best to avoid them. Keep an eye out for any suspicious packaging as well—like off-putting 'use by' dates.

Food Standards Australia’s advice is simple, 'Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice and should return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.' And we couldn't second that more!

In light of the current situation, it is crucial to emphasise the significance of inspecting all perishable items, particularly those that may harbour harmful bacteria.
