Could this simple mistake be sabotaging your kitchen cleaning efforts? Find out now!

We know it’s not particularly fun, but regular kitchen cleaning is important for a healthy, happy home.

But one pressing question is the order in which we should clean, and expert Sarah Karakaian gave some helpful advice.

According to Karakaian, it’s best to stick to wiping, scrubbing, and sweeping from top to bottom for cleaning kitchens, rather than going from the bottom up as gravity sends the grime downward.

'The last thing you want to do is spend an hour mopping your floor, only to have dust from the top of your light fixture or cabinet dot the floor,' she said.

Cleaning from the top down is also an excellent way to help you stay focused, as it can be overwhelming when you have a whole kitchen full of cleaning to do.

This method helps remove the panicked feeling of not knowing where to start.

If you are short on time, cleaning at eye level is usually a good start.

Pop on some gloves and give those cabinets a quick wipe-down. As for the pesky grease and grime on your kitchen cabinets, the best solution would be dish soap or bicarb soda.

If it’s been a while since they were cleaned, you can expect some dirty liquid dripping onto your counter—which is good as the next one you’ll be focusing on is your counter.

A combination of dish soap and water would work just as fine on your counters as on your cabinets.

She also advised against using vinegar on granite or marble surfaces, which can cause damage. You may also refer to this article that has tips on how to properly clean your cupboards.

This is also the perfect time to tackle those dishes. You would have scrubbed an entire sink in the time it takes for the dishwasher to do its thing!

You can then move on to the big appliances, like the fridge. If you don’t know when you last cleared out the fruits and vegetable compartment, now is the time to do it.

And of course, give your stove a good clean too. You can follow this guide on how to make your stove look brand new!

If you have extra time or over the weekend, it pays to check on your hood vent, as a greasy extractor fan can lead to an unpleasant, smelly kitchen. Keep the filters clean by soaking them in soapy water.

That goes for the hood light fixtures too, as they aren’t immune to grease either.

Once you’ve managed all that, it’s time to turn your attention to the lower part of your kitchen.

You can start by scrubbing baseboards with the dish soap solution you used for your cabinets and counters.

And with all the mess from cleaning the surfaces falling onto your floors, it’s finally time to sweep and mop!
Key Takeaways
  • Cleaning your kitchen in the correct order, from top to bottom, makes the task easier and more efficient.
  • Gravity sends grime from counters downwards, so cleaning the floor before the higher areas can result in having to redo work.
  • Cleaning cabinets at eye level first can prevent dirt and liquid from falling onto the counter and messing up the clean surface.
  • It is crucial to regularly clean kitchen appliances and objects like the extractor fan and baseboards to keep the kitchen spotless.
