Costco's big move? Here’s where your favourite store is heading next!

Costco, the renowned wholesale giant, has made a significant announcement that has left many Melbourne shoppers with mixed feelings.

The company has confirmed that its Docklands store, a staple in the Melbourne shopping scene for the past 15 years, will be closing its doors soon.

This decision has come as a surprise to many loyal customers who have frequented the Docklands location since it first opened.

The store, situated on Footscray Road, has been a go-to destination for bulk buying and has attracted shoppers from all over the city with its unique offerings and competitive prices.

According to reports, the store is making its big move to Ardeer, located in Melbourne's western suburbs.

'Costco is very excited to be a part of the wider Melbourne West community; we feel it is the perfect location for offering more convenience for our rapidly expanding membership base,' said Costco Country Manager Chris Tingman in a statement.

‘We look forward to sharing our progress with our members as we work on the relocation. Any updates will be shared via social media and on our website.’

While the exact closing date of the Docklands store has not been officially announced, it has been reported that customers were informed of a potential closure in August.

This news has been met with disappointment from local shoppers.

'I’m somewhat local, so that’s horrible. That’s a tragedy,' one shopper expressed.

The Docklands Costco made history as the first of the US chain's stores to open in Australia, launching with great fanfare and long queues of eager customers.

In an effort to breathe new life into the Docklands area, the state government, in partnership with the Australian Football League (AFL), announced plans to revitalise the location around Marvel Stadium.

'Docklands is continuing to evolve and adapt, and Marvel is an important factor in that,' said Acting Victorian Premier Ben Carroll.

The departure of Costco adds to a series of setbacks for Docklands, including the closure of the Central Pier in 2020 due to safety concerns, the shutdown of the Melbourne Star observation wheel in 2021, and the recent closure of the ATET party barge following a fire in 2023.

The move to Ardeer may offer a fresh start with the promise of a modern and possibly larger store equipped to serve the growing demands of the western suburbs.

However, for those who have come to rely on the convenience of the Docklands location, the transition may require some adjustment.

As people await further details on the move, it's important for shoppers to stay tuned to Costco's official channels for the latest information.

Given the only reason they opened there in the first place was the 5 years free rent that was used to entice them can understand why they're closing the site. Painful place to get to, parking is almost non existent and the seemingly endless roadworks and traffic congestion, which is going to get worse when the toll road opens & feeds on to the roads that lead to the area (future govt problems created by short thinking current policy). Costco knows it's 'member' base, clearly the 24 croissants and 48 toilet paper sales are NOT keeping up with the other sites' figures. Not too many inner city dwellers would do their shopping at Costco and the opening of 4-5 other sites in out burbs would result in less and less coming to the inner city site. Docklands (or Wastelands as it is better known by) is a waste of space, nothing there at the best of times, services the apartment dwellers, more junk food outlets than anything else.

What's with the use of "beloved" headlining every second story, SDC?
In the case of Costco, with their 15 stores located in 3 (count'em, THREE!) States (and only in seriously high-density areas at that) they don't even qualify for the old-style "Household Name" tag, much less "Beloved".

Still, on the bright side, you do seem to be leaving "X-Rated" alone..... Watch this space.
