A new chapter is unfolding for Costco, as the retail giant prepares to open its doors to a much-anticipated warehouse.
This isn't just any store launch—it's packed with exciting deals and special items that promise to grab the attention of bargain hunters and Costco fans alike.
Here's what you need to know as Costco expands its presence in Australia.
Costco’s new Ardeer warehouse opened its doors to the public on 9 April, marking a significant moment for the retailer in Melbourne's western suburbs.
The 16,000 square metre warehouse, located 15 kilometres from the CBD, took over from the first Australian Costco store in Docklands.
This new location joined the retailer's national network of 15 warehouses, offering customers a unique shopping experience.
Costco’s bulk-buy model gave shoppers access to groceries and products found in major supermarkets like Woolworths and Coles.
However, an annual membership brought more, from clothing and appliances to electronics, health products, sporting goods, and even insurance.
Megan Belanger, Costco Australia and New Zealand marketing and eCommerce director, spoke about the global influence of Costco stores: ‘Globally, we have this thing called the Costco effect, where we open a Costco and the prices drop in that area.
‘We’ve seen this happen with fuel, I hope this happens in this area for the people who live here and that there will be some good savings for them.’
The Ardeer warehouse launched with a range of special offers, featuring both everyday essentials and exclusive items that created a buzz.
Among the unique items on offer were a 15-litre container of ghee, a 7.5-kilogram tub of Maggi gravy mix, and a 4.5-litre Grey Goose vodka.
Additionally, the store stocked a 100-inch Hisense smart TV, an extra-large golf cart, and even a two-person infrared sauna.
For those looking for something quirky, Costco also featured human-sized teddy bears and palm trees.
‘All of these items offer Costco’s signature amazing value and quality,’ said Belanger.
‘Stock is limited, so members should get in quick to grab their favourite items on opening day.’
The warehouse included specialty departments such as bakery, meat, produce, deli, optical, hearing aid centre, tyre centre, food court, insurance, utility, and vehicle services.
Costco’s $118 million investment into the Ardeer community provided jobs for over 2,000 workers during construction, with 300 employees when the store opened.
‘Costco sees this region as dynamic and fast-growing and we believe that we can bring great value in relation to a wide range of products and services to the community,’ said Belanger.
The Ardeer site also housed Costco’s largest petrol station in Australia, which had already opened in March.
As a membership-based retailer, Costco’s annual membership costs $65 for businesses and individuals and $130 for executive memberships.
While the retailer's footprint remained smaller than that of Woolworths and Coles, Costco had already made a mark since its first Australian store opened in Docklands in 2009.
In 2023, Costco Australia reported a total of $4.4 billion in sales, a significant increase from $3 billion in 2022.
