Costco’s $6.99 roast chook debate is exploding online—is it a bargain or just plain bad?

It's no secret that the cost of living has been on the rise, making it tough for many to keep up with expenses. Savvy shoppers are constantly looking for great deals that could stretch their dollars.

One such deal that has been making waves recently is the mouth-watering roast chicken available at Costco for just $6.99.

This chook has been causing quite a stir in the online foodie community, with many debating whether it's too good to be true or a culinary misstep by the bulk retailer.

The debate began in a social media group, where a user praised the roast chicken as an economical and protein-rich option.

'If you have a Costco near you,' they suggested, 'their huge roast chickens are $6.99. Approximately 1kg of meat off one bird. Imagine what you could do with that.'

It wasn't long before the comments section lit up with a flurry of opinions.

On one side, the budget-conscious diners hailed the chicken as a steal, a perfect starting point for a variety of dishes that could stretch across several meals.

The price point, especially for the size of the chicken, seemed unbeatable, and for those looking to stretch their dollars, it was a welcome addition to the dinner table.

However, not all feedback was glowing. Some members of the group were quick to ruffle feathers, criticising the chicken for being undercooked and lacking in flavour.

'Yes, they're cheap, but it's still not worth it—they're gross,' one commenter said.

Another added, 'I don't like the taste, it's weird,' citing personal experience with the product.

The texture was a particular point of contention, with several people describing the meat as 'an awful texture' and '99.9 per cent raw inside’.

This led to a discussion about the cooking process, with some suggesting that the chickens' large size might contribute to uneven cooking.

In an attempt to address these concerns, it was revealed that Costco had tried to rectify the issue by cooking the chickens for longer.

Despite this, complaints about a 'watery' texture persisted, and some customers felt the need to re-season the chicken themselves to enhance the flavour.

'I salted it a little before throwing it in a roll with lettuce and mayo, and it was a whole other bird,' a group member recounted, sharing her method for reviving the underwhelming chook.

Defenders of the Costco roast chicken were not to be outdone.

They argued that while the chicken might not be bursting with flavour on its own, it serves as a versatile base that can be transformed with the right accompaniments.

'It works when covered in gravy or sauce or in a pasta bake,' one supporter claimed, highlighting the chicken's potential when paired with other ingredients.

The pink hue of the meat, often mistaken for a sign of undercooking, was also addressed. Some Costco loyalists explained that the chickens are brined, a process that can result in a pinker colour even when fully cooked.

Absolutely love their chickens, I make chicken risotto. It takes no time to add a bit of salt or pepper with it to give it some flavour.

I love their chickens, we often get one to use in sandwiches and to use in casseroles- chicken veroniqhe - my mums recipe being one of our regular ones. Never had a problem with the taste.

The actual cost is $71.99 of which $65 is annual membership fee.
There is a way to shop at Cosco without paying the $65 membership fee. You need to know someone who is a member and ask them to purchase a $25 gift card. With the gift card, you can now shop at Cosco and use the gift card to pay your bill; Of course, you can spend more than the $25, just put the balance on your credit/debit card.
OH. don't forget to pay the $25 to the member...

I have only bought at one store so do not know if they are all the same but when we bought it tasted like the old charcoal chicken we used to buy years ago. Charcoal chicken stores used to be everywhere when we were younger hard to find these days, first taste of the Costco chicken took me right back there. Have purchased quite a few times and never been undercooked, tender as any chicken I have ever eaten, if your not used to brined chicken then it may not be to your taste but its the best way to keep it tender and far from flavourless.
