Cost of living crisis or ‘next-level’ price gouging? Customer furious after seeing sweet fruit’s price

Life for budgeters is already tough, and it looks like it just got tougher—for those who love their strawberries.

Locals in one Sydney suburb have reported that the price of their local supermarket's strawberries has risen to an outrageous level, with single punnets of the sweet and juicy fruit on sale at $22.99 a pop!

Strawberry lovers in one Sydney suburb had a rude awakening recently; when they saw the outrageous price tag of a single punnet of the sweet, juicy fruit.

Oddly, these bountiful berries found at Mosman's Harris Farm Markets have become the latest evidence of the worsening cost of living.

A customer wrote on their local Facebook group over the weekend: ‘Apt this brand of strawberries at Spit Junction is called “Hermes” because at $22.99 a punnet, they would need, quite literally, to taste like the Nectar of the Gods to be justifiable.’

The customer also shared a picture of the Hermes-branded red strawberries being listed for $22.99 a punnet, with white ones sitting beside the red ones.

‘Time to call Peak Mosman?’ the customer asked.

After the post blew up, the customer returned to the group with an update–apparently, the sign was now gone, and this time, the white Hermes Strawberries were listed as $19.99 a punnet.

The local's comments ranged from outraged to confused, with one suggesting the price tag may have been due to a typo: ‘The extra $20 is for the extras in strawberries.’

‘More fool to the Mosmanites for buying them at that price!! Outrageous!’ One stated.

‘Do they come with someone feeding you?’ Someone replied.

Meanwhile, someone wrote: ‘That is next level price gouging.’

However, not all locals were upset at the cost, with one saying: ‘If people are happy to pay $22.99/punnet, then that's what they're worth. If someone doesn't want to go to Woolworths or ALDI or another shop and wants to pay $22.99, then that's what their price ought to be.’

Harris Farm Markets haven't yet responded to the issue, but some locals believed the pricing wasn't as outrageous as it first appeared–as the sign was possibly for two punnets of red strawberries at $10.

Seriously why big note yourself by going on FB? Why not just ask in store one of the employees, store manager, produce manager? Why on earth didn't you think to do that? No wonder there are so many snowflakes in our society today.

Surely no one would pay that. I think they should be left on the shelf to rot. That's just an absolute rip off.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 don't you think $22 is extreme for strawberries or are you from Mosman 🤔🤩

It's winter. I buy oranges, mandarins and leave the strawberries until they're back in season.

It must be strawberry time up here in sunny Qld. They have been quite reasonable price and I love them. Yum.

And where is the photo of this alleged wrong price taken by this "social media hero"? Bet it doesn't even exist?🙄

Anyway, attached is the proper prices of their strawberries.

(not quite sure I'd call strawberries in the off season a staple). can only assume was a typo, but why would you not ask the seller if the price is correct. No that makes too much sense, I'll take a photo, upload to the book of faces and then put my 2cents worth in comments in far more time than it would have taken to get an answer to a question.

It's the North Shore syndrome Lisa, have a Blackberry, Raspberry, Blueberry day.

RIP OFF!!!! For that I'd expect them to be dipped milk chocolate and in a decorative dish that i could keep forever!
They'd wanna atleast be better than the sourberries in regional QLD - here ours are small, barely ripe, hard and sour!

This is why I grow my own and I don't even like them or eat them.
Luckily kids and grandbabies do and they love the prize winning jam I make out of them.

Oh for goodness sake. 1) It was in MOSMAN! 2) It was Harris Farms!
Too rich for you just don't buy them.

I wouldn't be surprised if they were organic too. It was MOSMAN!
