Commonwealth bank

A new scam has just hit the phones. The call came had a Melbourne no attached to it saying that they were from the commonwealth bank and that there was a payment of $800 yesterday morning made to a "John Smith", how original, when I said that I didn't have 800 in my account he hung up also before I could tell him that I don't have an account with the commonwealth. I am pretty sure that this has come from the security breaches from optus as they rang on my mobile and used my correct name. As an awful lot of people have commonwealth accounts I thought you might be able to use this. So if you have a commonwealth account please be aware and careful.

Please be careful with answering random calls from strangers! :( Thank you so much for letting us know about this scheme.

Someone called me from the nab yesterday, telling me of a fraudulent withdrawal of $3000.00. All I needed to do was confirm my details for security reasons and they would get straight onto retrieving it for me. Hmmmm….ok. And what time was the withdrawal? Apparently only an hour ago but we must work fast. So I gave them my cats registration number and wished them all the best. By the way,I don’t bank with nab,nor do I have $3000.00!!

Why not report those calls to your telco ?
Mine have been reduced by a lot already as I report every dumb caller
I am on the do not call register which I update every six months. I block each and every call that gets through my spam guard on my phone and send most onto the spam sites. I get upwards of 4-5 calls every single day. I simply can’t be bothered spending so much time on them. My husband gets a similar amount, although the spam filter is excellent and we can just hang up on most of them.

By hanging up on them only indicates to them that they should call again
Scamwatch is useless
I email a copy of the from my iphone to vodafone and now much less callers
With scammy emails, I do not bother to click or reply as again that sends the message that someone is there, I just block

Yes,I never ever reply to emails. Delete and block. The calls I’m just stumped. They just keep coming. I don’t answer, they call. I block, they call from another number…it’s never ending and so frustrating.

Have you also had the scam that begins with a recorded voice saying they are from Vodafone (my telcom) and that your account is about to be cut off. Click 1 for English or 2 for CHINESE to continue. I hung up and blocked and deleted the caller. BTW my account was not cut off!

Recently my husband received two texts at roughly between 3 & 4 am. We turn our mobiles onto silent at night - our children (& my siblings) know to always only call our landline (extension in bedroom & main in study) anytime after 9pm if there is some sort of emergency.

But the idiot scammers must be from overseas somewhere and are ignorant to not realise an ‘04’ mobile number is most likely an Australian number and while it may be daytime in their country it is nighttime here. We just delete them and recorded calls suffer the same fate.

My brother-in-law (in the UK) does the same thing except with a trombone. It works!!!

It's not always easy to recognise a number that shows on your phone, because there are so many you need to memorise but cannot memorise all. We never answer 02 and 03 numbers as we do not know anyone in those states, so we let them ring out.

I would have told him it was not a good time right now as you were busy doing what he suggested in the previous call. THEN hung up! 😊 😊

That’s a good one and may have shut him up for a few seconds but some of them can become quite rude and vocal.

I’ve just had a recorded call supposedly from Amazon saying my Amazon Prime account is about to expire and will be automatically re-charged (some ridiculous figure). I don’t have any account with Amazon and especially not a Prime account. Lovely lady’s recorded voice message but Another scammer, no doubt. She was quickly put in the trash.

If the number is in my contacts list it comes up as the name of the person calling. If it’s not in my contacts list then it’s an unknown number and I don’t answer it. There’s no rule that says you have to pick up a call. If it’s a genuine call they’ll leave a message.
