Coles employee reveals shocking $100 price tag on Vegemite tub: ‘Sometimes I just shake my head’

Vegemite is more than just a spread down under—it's an important part of Australian culture.

Made from leftover brewers' yeast extract with various vitamins and minerals added, the salty black paste has been fueling Aussies with breakfast energy since the 1920s.

But one Coles supermarket employee recently shared a photo online that left many Australians scratching their heads at this iconic food in disbelief.

The image, posted on a social media group for Coles employees, showed a massive 2.5kg tub of Vegemite with a staggering $100 price tag attached.

The employee, who stumbled upon this unusual sight during their shift, shared the image with the caption, 'I found this at work yesterday. Sometimes I just shake my head.’

The post quickly sparked a flurry of reactions, with many expressing shock and disbelief at the seemingly exorbitant price of the iconic Aussie staple.

However, there's more to this story than meets the eye.

It is believed that Coles supermarkets across Australia do not sell 2.5kg buckets of Vegemite to the public.

These huge buckets are typically used in Coles bakeries for preparing their most wanted Vegemite Scrolls and are not available for purchase by customers.

It appears that the tub—which seems to be in the stationery department—was likely placed on the shelf with a $100 price tag as part of a prank.

The post certainly did provoke reactions, with many social media users finding the situation amusing.

One user joked: 'Meanwhile, your bakery is using the standard Vegemite jars while they are waiting for their stock to arrive!'

'I gather it’s for the bakery’s Vegemite scrolls then,' another speculated.

It doesnt seem to be on a normal shelf, it looks like cool room shelving, label doesn't state how much per so many grams. I think this is rubbish. You can buy 4 x 2.5kg vegemite on Good groceries for $168.66 free delivery.

Wouldn't buy vegemite as it is Halal certified
Halal Certified just means that the product has been certified as fit for consumption in Islamic countries; i.e., we can export it to them and receive their hard-currency in return. What part of "Balance of Trade" do you have trouble understanding?

WHAT a SICK JOKE!!

Don't have trouble understanding.... I do have trouble understanding a) Why the certification fees are tax-free... the company is registered as a charity (Charity My Foot) and therefore is tax-free. b) Why are the products not clearly labelled (they got rid of the website exposing this practice). c) The director was boasting about how he spent the proceeds on expensive shoes for his wife... give me a break....
