Christmas Suggestion
Decades ago before I went to Uni and became a high school teacher, I was raising my kids on the Sole Parents Benefit after my divorce, so money was something to be dreamed of. When Christmas came around, I managed to buy small gifts for my kids and from Santa, but for others in my life that was sometimes difficult. So an idea was born.
1. Make a scroll (piece of nice paper and a bit of wooden dowel to make the scroll)
2. On the scroll, write IOU, and then a gift. For example, IOU one hour of cleaning, or IOU a trip to (insert wherever), or IOU a homecooked meal. No limits on one's
imagination.
3. The IOU can be called in when the receiver wishes.
My son wanted to give his grandmother a gift for Christmas, so he wrote an IOU for an afternoon working in mum's garden. Mum called the IOU in, in January. My son worked hard, cleaning the gutters, mowing the lawn and, under mum's guidance, weeding the garden, something she loved but the arthritis got too much for her to do the job. My mum always said it was the best Christmas present she could remember in recent memory.
This gift costs nothing but time and effort on the part of the giver. It is perfect for those who have little money to spend on gifts and, trust me, will be appreciated (especially by older people who understand the true meaning of Christmas more than the young do.)
