Checkout act shocks 83-year-old Coles shopper

Supermarkets aren’t just places where we pick up our groceries.

They’re the stages upon which the unscripted dramas of everyday life unfold.

One such incident, shared by an 83-year-old shopper from Melbourne, recently caught our eye as it went against the grain of everyday supermarket interactions.

The vibrant 83-year-old, a one-person sunshine-spreader, enlivened his local Coles checkout staff by greeting them with his customary, heart-warming, ‘Hello, my lovely.’

As he began sorting his items on the conveyor belt, his shopping flow was disrupted by what seemed like another over-eager customer who asked to ‘push in’.

He said, ‘I smiled and told her it had taken me 83 years to get to this moment in my life, so a few more minutes wouldn’t hurt me.’

In an era where rising impatience seems to be the new normal, what might have been the beginning of a minor discord ended up flipping the script into something beautifully unexpected.

‘Her face lit up, and she said, “That’s good. I’d like it if you will let me pay for your shopping today.” Then she swiped her card and returned to her own trolley load of shopping at the back of the queue.’ he added.

'Not all angels have wings and halos', the shopper wrote on social media.

The true essence and strength of kindness can sometimes be overshadowed amid the grim day-to-day.

However, there are moments that serve as reminders of the remarkable power that lies within selfless acts.

The 83-year-old shopper went on to thank the lady and said, ‘Your kindness made an old man’s day.’

This sense of unity with the ‘anonymous lady’ brought joy to the older gent's day, reinforcing the power of simple acts of kindness in our daily deeds.

Coles embraced the incident, stating their appreciation for acts of kindness, no matter how small, from both team members and customers.

A spokesperson asserted, ‘You never know what is happening in someone else's life, and small acts of kindness can go a long way and make a difference to someone’s day.'

That sort of good deed makes me realise the world isn't completely rotten. Guess that woman is a good samaritan.

Recently my wife and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary at a restaurant in Forster NSW. It is a small Italian restaurant that just a handful or customers. We walked in just after another, much younger than us I have to admit. As we we were talking with the waiter my wife advised that we were celebrating our wedding anniversary. It was a loverly evening, beautiful food and wine and of course company. The younger couple left just before us and as we went up to pay our bill, the waiter said that our bill had been paid. The waiter said that the couple overheard my wife say it was our anniversary. I did not know what to say, my wife started to cry. All efforts to find this two beautiful people failed, they did not make a reservation just walked in off the street. The bill would have come to around $180.00. We just wished we could thank them for their generosity and kindness.

Here I was thinking the world is a terrible place. Looks like I'm wrong again. And what's more I'm glad of that.

I didn't have someone pay for me, but the wonderful customer service girl at a Woolies store I went to, went above and beyond for me. I needed $10 of 20 cent pieces for the library to photocopy documents and my bank doesn't have a branch anywhere near the centre. The service girl went out of her way to get all the 20 cent pieces from her tills and then went and got some more from elsewhere. You don't often find that excellent service these days. Thanks to the lass in Woolies Toowong for being so kind to an older person.

I will always let other people go ahead of me if they only have a few things, as I nearly always have a large shop.
Recently when I was only picking up a single item at Aldi, the checkout operator asked the lady who was unpacking her loaded trolley, if she minded if I went through first, her reply "yes I do"
Poor miserable lady!!!

I would like to share an event, that happened recently. I was coming off the Freeway when my car stalled I quickly put the hazards on. The car started again and I moved a short way, it happened again. The cars behind me started hooting their horns at me. That made me more frustrated. Anyway as soon as I could, I pulled my car off the road and called the NRMA. It was an extremely hot day. From a negative episode
with traffic, as I waited for the NRMA The people that live in my Suburb restored my Faith in the kindness of people. A good number of people driving by, stopped and asked if they could help. All were concerned about my welfare. One lady offered me to sit in her car, and wait until the NRMA arrived. I declined the offer, but was grateful to her for making it.
The "cream on the Cake" came when a Motor Cycle Policeman stopped, and I thought oh no I am in trouble now. He inquired what my problem was, I told him. He was on his way home from work. He said " would I like some water" I said "I do have some". He then proceeded to open the "saddle bags" and gave me an icy cold bottle of water. It was marvellous. So, there are some impatient people who contribute their stress to people in distress, and then you have the angels of the world, that fix it up. I might add, I am a elderly Lady of 78 years young

Here I was thinking the world is a terrible place. Looks like I'm wrong again. And what's more I'm glad of that.
The world is not a terrible place, we just hear about the terrible things more than the pleasant or inspiring ones. It sells more news. I just try to smile every day and enjoy what comes my way. Life can be so bleak if we let.

My saying when asked "how are you today" or something similar is quite simple really.... "Still Breathing" which brings a smile to everyone's face even those within earshot of the conversation

How mean of her. I've noticed Aldi seems to do this for everyone and I think its a great idea, after all what's another minute or two.

The day I was with a group of elderly clients from our aged care hostel having lunch at a local coffee shop, there were about 12 of us . After lunch when we went to pay the bill we were informed that a nice gentleman had already paid it for all of us. It would have been at least $120. I later found out he was a workmate of my hubby’s, so I did get to thank him and made him some extra mulberry pies that season. He stated he did it as he knew how little money some older people have after paying the hostel fees, and as a gesture of appreciation to me and my co worker for looking after our older generation. It was so appreciated by all of us.
