Life has been hard, to say the least, since the pandemic began, and it's getting harder with the rising cost of living. Christmas this year will be even more expensive and difficult for many families, as they struggle to afford basic necessities, let alone presents.
But amid all this bad news, there is a glimmer of hope: a new supermarket has just opened its doors to help Australians struggling to make ends meet. Everything in the store is 100% free, and customers can pick up anything from groceries to other necessities.
Non-profit organisation Serving Our People opened Queensland’s first free supermarket on the Gold Coast on Thursday.
The store is filled with donated goods and is being manned entirely by volunteers.
Speaking to Seven’s breakfast show, Sunrise, Yas Matbouly, founder of Serving Our People, said, ‘We have all recipients from all across Queensland that will have access to our first free supermarket that we’re launching today.’
‘We’re hoping that this will definitely help thousands and thousands of Australians that are doing it tough at the moment - to help them with the basic needs of food.’
Volunteers arrived at the store at 6 am to set up the supermarket for its official opening.
Because of the store’s generous concept, Mr Matbouly said it has been ‘received amazingly’ by the community, with many struggling Australians coming in to get goods for Christmas.
'We have about 350 homeless friends coming in a couple of hours for a Christmas homeless lunch that will also have access to the first free supermarket,' he said.
'It's creating a big impact, and we're hoping to help thousands and thousands over the period.'
Mr Matbouly also thanked the local residents who had already donated bags of non-perishable food in time for the store’s launch.
The organisation has placed donation boxes in Coles stores in the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and Logan for Queenslanders interested in donating.
‘The general public can put any items in there, such as canned tuna, pasta, whatever it is, and then our team will go and collect it, and then we’ll bring it back to the free supermarket to make it into bags of love,’ Mr Matbouly said.
He revealed that the organisation’s next focus is providing shelter for people in need.
Here at the SDC, we're delighted to report on some good news! If you're in the area and in need, you can visit the new free supermarket and pick up some items for Christmas.
For those who want to contribute to the cause, feel free to donate non-perishable food items by visiting any Coles supermarkets in Gold Coast, Brisbane, and Logan. You can make the holiday season a little brighter for those in need.
