Chatime issues urgent recall for popular item affecting safety

Bubble tea has taken the world by storm, captivating many with its delightful flavours and chewy tapioca pearls.

Although bubble tea is a beloved treat, its frequent consumption can lead to health risks due to high sugar and calorie content, making moderation essential for balancing.

Chatime, the famous Taiwanese bubble tea brand, has issued an urgent recall on one of its merchandise items that could pose a serious risk to you and your family.

The item in question is the Chatime Purple 700mL reusable light-up cup, a vibrant accessory for any bubble tea lover.

It is complete with the Chatime logo, a dome lid, and a purple straw.

However, this seemingly harmless cup has raised significant safety concerns due to its button battery compartment.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has highlighted that the cup's batteries are not secured adequately, making them easily accessible to young children.

This poses a grave risk, as the batteries could be swallowed, leading to choking, severe internal burns, or even death.

The urgency of this recall is underscored by the fact that severe or fatal injuries can occur within two hours or less after ingestion.

Moreover, the ACCC has pointed out that the light-up cup lacks the necessary warning information regarding the dangers associated with the batteries.

This oversight means consumers might be unaware of the product's button batteries, further increasing the risk of accidental ingestion by children.

The recall was initially announced earlier this year in May, but it has recently been updated to include additional suppliers and amended sale dates.

The affected cups were sold between 21 November 2022 and 29 May 2024, indicating that many potentially hazardous items could be circulated.

If you or someone you know has purchased this Chatime cup, it's crucial to act immediately.

Chatime, founded in 2005 in Taiwan, has grown to over 2,500 stores globally, with Australia being a particularly profitable market.

The brand's commitment to customer safety is being tested as it leads a global review to prevent such issues from recurring.
