Charged over child sex case—found dead days later in eerie scene

Content warning: This article discusses allegations involving child exploitation and suicide.

He held an elite role at one of Australia’s biggest banks.

Now he’s dead—just days after confronting explosive allegations involving underage girls.

Police found him alone in a national park, with no one to answer the questions left behind.

Christopher James McCann, a senior Commonwealth Bank executive, was found dead on 17 July in Springbrook National Park in Queensland’s Gold Coast hinterland.

He had been extradited from Sydney just days earlier to face a charge of using the internet to procure a child under 16 for sex.

Queensland Police confirmed the 50-year-old’s death and said it was not being treated as suspicious.

A report was being prepared for the coroner.

McCann had been arrested in Sydney the previous week and appeared at Central Local Court.

Brisbane detectives had applied for his extradition after an 18-year-old sex worker allegedly told police McCann asked her to supply two underage girls for sex.

The court heard the alleged request occurred in May, when McCann travelled to Brisbane and stayed at the five-star Sofitel Hotel.

According to police, the 18-year-old woman allegedly brought two girls—aged 14 and 15—to the hotel to meet McCann.

However, the court was told McCann never opened the door, and a hotel staff member became involved.

Police had reportedly already intercepted McCann’s phone and seized electronic devices from his home.

At the time of his court appearance, McCann had no prior criminal history.

He applied for bail, hoping to travel to Brisbane of his own accord.

Magistrate Clare Farnan refused, stating: ‘Whilst the single count before the court is one which did not result in any harm to an actual child, if I can put it in that way, it is an allegation of Mr McCann having allegedly tried to procure underage girls for the purpose of a sexual act.’

Following the magistrate’s decision, he was flown to Brisbane alongside police.

On 14 July, McCann appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court, where he was formally accused of using the internet to engage a Brisbane sex worker to facilitate contact with two underage girls.

He was granted bail and ordered to stay with a friend on the Gold Coast.

His bail conditions included not contacting anyone under the age of 18 except his two sons, using only one phone with no encrypted apps, abiding by an overnight curfew, and refraining from drugs and alcohol.

McCann, who worked in the finance team at Commonwealth Bank, was reportedly dismissed after the allegations came to light.

Police confirmed a report on his death would be submitted to the coroner.

His defence lawyer has been contacted for comment.

Springbrook National Park has sadly been the site of more than one unsettling discovery in recent months.

While Christopher James McCann’s death was ruled non-suspicious, the area has drawn attention for reasons that are equally disturbing.

Another grim incident from the same location left authorities and locals shaken.
