Carrie Fisher's last unseen movie, Wonderwell, is finally hitting select theatres, seven years after her tragic passing.

Vertical, a film distributor, has acquired the rights to distribute the movie in North America, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. The late actress completed filming for Wonderwell in 2016, just weeks before her death, allowing her fans to enjoy one final performance.

The film is planned for a limited theatrical release at AMC Theatres from June 23 in the US before being released digitally. It stars Rita Ora, Nell Tiger Free, Sebastian Croft, and Kiera Milward, offering a captivating ensemble to complement Fisher's on-screen magic.

For those of us in Australia, we can look forward to watching the film digitally shortly after its limited theatrical release overseas.

Director Vlad Marsavin revealed that the project took a staggering seven years to complete since filming began, with production complicated by unexpected obstacles such as the pandemic and Fisher's untimely passing.

Marsavin said that Fisher’s magical on-screen moments as Hazel couldn't be released at a more perfect time, noting that Wonderwell will include a dedication to the late actress.

While Fisher's presence in the film is the main attraction for her fans, her colleagues also have fond memories of working with the actress.

Rita Ora, Fisher's co-star, mentioned that 'Working alongside Carrie Fisher was one of those experiences that you never forget.'

For an actress renowned for her wit, warmth, and talent, it seems fitting that this final performance, as her character Hazel, would leave a lasting impression not only on the film's audience but also on her fellow cast members.

The story follows a girl named Violet, portrayed by Kiera Milward, who is guided by Fisher's character, Hazel, to a mysterious portal near a mediaeval Italian village, offering her a unique view of her potential future.

Reflecting on the powerful impact of the film, Producer Lee Rudnicki described the moment he saw Fisher's final scene, which 'took [his] breath away’. Rudnicki hinted that Fisher's last line is about life itself—a line so precious and heart-breaking that he opted not to spoil it in his post.

Carrie Fisher was given the role of Princess Leia in Star Wars. I'm not aware of any other roles she's ever played.

My daughter will be so excited to see this film. She is a huge Star Wars fan who got to meet Carrie Fisher on several occasions. One of her precious keepsakes is a signed photo of herself and Carrie Fisher, both dressed in Star Wars costumes, taken at a Star Wars expo she attended.
