Unbelievable, but true! In the world of extraordinary auction surprises, there's a story that's ripe for the picking. Picture this: a seemingly ordinary fruit box, the kind you might find at any local market, recently fetched an astounding $67,000 at an auction.
It's a story that leaves us both amazed and intrigued, proving that treasures can often be found in the most unexpected places.
A man who remained anonymous recently discovered a very rare and valuable item at the bottom of an old banana box. Upon finding it, the individual – who had been clearing out his late father's home since 2018 – made a move to put it under the hammer for an imperative auction.
What he had found in the box was a typescript of a legendary novel by the renowned Argentinian author, Julio Cortázar. The stack included 46 pages worth of stories – 35 of which had been published in the first edition of 'Cronopios and Famas’ in 1962, and four of which were published later, as well as seven never seen before by the public.
At the time of the auction, the seminal work was estimated to retail at around $20,000, but under the hammer, it fetched an unbelievable $66,702.71 – more than three times its original price.
According to a report by the Zorrilla Subastas auction house in Montevideo, the conditions of the typescript were unlike any other. Two experts of Cortázar, Professor Aldo Mazzucchelli and Professor Sonia Gómez have confirmed the accuracy of the work.
'From a literary point of view, taking into account, especially the time and context of composition, the style, the author’s idiolect, and the themes, there is no solid reason to believe that these pages are not authentic,' said Aldo Mazzucchelli.
As for the story of ‘Cronopios and Famas’ itself, it follows two fictional characters of the same name. ‘Cronopios’ are imaginary fictional beings with no set shape and a playful, childlike outlook, while ‘Famas’ are known for their exactness, attention to detail and knowing right from wrong. On Cortázar’s dedicated and memorable marble gravestone in Paris’ Montparnasse Cemetery, there’s even a sculpture of multiple cronopios as a special tribute.
From just a simple banana box in the corner of an old room has come a life-changing windfall for this man all because of his dad's eccentric collection-hoarding habits.
Members, this amazing find goes to show that it's always worth taking a look at those dusty boxes before you throw them out! You never know what surprises you might find.
