Budget paper towel voted NUMBER ONE by experts - the 'sustainable' option is a flop!

For most Aussies, paper towels are one of the essential items that should never run out in the house. Most households keep paper towels on hand for a variety of purposes, including mopping up spills and accidents, cleaning the barbeque grill, replacing cloth napkins, and even checking the oil level in a vehicle's engine.

But with hundreds of different brands and options readily available in supermarkets, how can one be confident that they are getting the most bang for their buck when it comes to the paper towels that they purchase?

Not to worry, as CHOICE, an Australian consumer company, has evaluated and graded 27 different paper towel brands to decide which one is the best.

Each item was evaluated on four criteria: how readily it tore at the perforation, how well it withstood puncturing, how easily it tore while wet, and how much water it soaked up.

1. Viva Rinse & Reuse Towel - $9.48 @ Catch

It was concluded that the Viva Rinse and Reuse Towel was the best product available on the market.

The product was given outstanding scores across the board, including an absorption rate of 90%, a score of 95% for its wet tear strength, and an average rating of C for its ethical performance.

It's a shame that these paper towels aren't biodegradable, but thankfully, they can be reused 10 times as long as regular paper towels can.

2. Quilton Tuffy - $4.30 @ Woolworths

With an average score of 85% and a price tag of $4.30, Quilton Tuffy came in at a respectable second place.

Although it had the same wet tear strength rating as the Viva Rinse brand of paper towels, it only absorbed 83% of liquid on the test, thus falling behind.

The product also got a lower separation score of just 61%, which means that the paper towel isn't the easiest to tear off the roll.

3. Strike 100% Recycled Paper Paper Towel - $3.25 @ Woolworths

The Strike 100% Recycled Paper Paper Towel from Woolworths got an overall score of 80% and came in third in CHOICE's review test.

The product performed excellently in the tests measuring absorption and separation, but it did not fare as well in the tests for wet tear strength or puncture resistance.

It was a stroke of luck that the purchase was ranked third, as the Coles Ultra paper towels were tied for fourth with a difference of only one per cent.

On the other hand, the How We Roll Co 100% Sustainable Bamboo Paper Towel, which costs $19.50, came in last place with an overall score of only 48%.

You might expect that given its high price point, it would do reasonably well in the test, but sadly, that's not the case. The product got below-average scores in all categories, including 40% for absorption, 54% for wet tear strength, and 59% for puncture.

Here is a complete rundown of the paper towels that have received the highest and lowest ratings from CHOICE:

I find the best value is the coles ultra. Thick like the more expensive ones and large rolls.

I dislike the coles and woollies home brand ,

If viva is 1/2 price then I stock up on it but unfortunately it hasn't been on sale for ages.

Aldi paper towel is good as well but hard to get , shelves are always empty atm

I have a doze face washers which I use for those small cleanups And then they are washed and reused. I’ve been using them for about 8 years now, so obviously the cost has been minimal.

I use reusable cloths as well as paper towels for certain things. Although paper towels can't be recycled, they can be composted which is great.

Phew! When doing my shopping last week I remembered the other article we had about paper towels and so bought the Tuffy ones. Good to hear that choice rate them too.:)

I have used the Viva paper towel and what you are left with after one use is bits of paper towel fit for the bin. A waste of money in my opinion.

Yeah I’m sure the Viva reuse towel is excellent but who’s going to pay $9.98 for paper towels? NOT me anyway! For clean up around the house home brand are quite fine! If they don’t cut it then I use a cloth- not ‘rocket science’!!

If Viva paper towels are made similar to the Viva rinse and reuse, I would prefer sticking with the Ultra paper towels thank you. I used the Viva and it did stay strong however I use a paper towel to dry some vegetables with the skin on and hard boiled eggs after peeling then rinsing, I found these very fine dark thread like particles being left on the eggs🤔 Ewww, so I changed back to Ultra☺️
