Jess took to TikTok to explain how the common misconception that ‘rooms with no natural light should always be painted white’ isn't correct.

Although a light shade of white will reflect whatever light is available, Jess suggested opting for something more vibrant if you want to really brighten up the room.

Jess showed photos of a hallway as an example. It had been painted white but still felt rather dull and dark.

She mentioned that opting for a bright shade like yellow instead would help to bounce the light of any artificial sources like lamps and candles around the room effectively.

Jess then opened up a tin of yellow paint and walked her followers through the painting process.

After the hallway was completely finished, we were all amazed at the incredible transformation! The yellow paint made the room feel larger, lighter and much more inviting.

Though, yellow is certainly not everyone’s cup of tea.

When it comes to adding colour to a space with little natural light, opt for brighter colours with a subtle touch of cool tones and pastels in between. The bold colours will open up the space, while the cool tones will help soften the brightness.

You can also tone it down with a few neutral colours or textures, like wood accents or fabric patterns, to break up the colours.

Combining colours like yellow, light blue, and mint green will result in a cheerful and vibrant effect while still adding to the overall feeling of brightness. If you're feeling bold and creative, try experimenting with different colours to see which works best in your room.

The right colours can completely transform a space with no natural light, so don't be afraid to try something new! A can of paint is much cheaper than a skylight installation, after all!
Key Takeaways

  • People often think that small rooms with no natural light should be painted white, but in fact, a bright colour will help bounce artificial light around the room.
  • Instead of using the traditional white paint, interior designer Jess Clark advised using a bright yellow colour to brighten up dreary hallways.

It seems thousands of people agree with Jess' conclusion: white is out, colour is in!

A bright, colourful combination like yellow and light blue could be the perfect way to unlock a little extra sunshine and brightness in your home.

So members, if you were ever frustrated by how dark your rooms feel, why not give this interior styling trick a try? It could just make all the difference.
