By the look of the handlebars on the bike on my right of this photo I am given the impression that it is a "Girls' " bicycle but most girls' bikes also had mudguards and possibly skirt guards which I can't see in this photo. When I was about eleven, my two brothers and I rode our bikes twenty-five miles to Brisbane to visit relatives, stayed overnight and rode home again the next day. The road was bitumen- about two lanes width and no lines marked for the middle of the road or the edges.
