Big W has immediately pulled out a popular kids item from its shelves after a potentially deadly defect with the product was detected.
The recall was ordered for all sizes of Caprice Australia's light up thongs — which included eight varieties of thongs featuring designs such as Barbie, Spider-Man, Star Wars, Frozen, L.O.L Surprise! OMG and Minecraft — over concerns that it could cause deaths.
Authorities pointed out that the design of the product allows the compartment containing the two button batteries to get exposed over time, leading to kids getting access to the batteries, which may cause hazards to them.

The defect may cause young children to accidentally swallow the batteries, potentially causing severe internal burn injuries that could result in serious illness or death.
Additionally, the button batteries are also choking hazard to young children.
The thongs were available for purchase in all Big W stores nationwide and on its website from September 2020 to May 2022.
Customers are advised to stop wearing the thongs and to return them to any Big W store for a full refund.
Caprice Australia also encourages shoppers to contact them at 03 9922 2500 for more information.
For our members, we recommend checking your grandkids' or loved ones' thongs to see if they are using the defective footwear and to prevent them from experiencing any accidents.
Stay safe, folks!
