Better Homes and Gardens star Joh Griggs' update on husband's health scare

Johanna ‘Joh’ Griggs, a beloved host of Better Homes and Gardens, has been a prominent figure on television for several years. Her personality, coupled with her expertise in craft and cooking, has endeared her to many.

However, last year was a challenging period for Joh as her husband, Todd Huggins, received a diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma.

Despite not being as lethal as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma is still a type of skin cancer that needs immediate treatment.

Todd’s simple surgery, however, took a turn for the worse when a severe infection occurred, making the difficult situation even more serious.

In a recent interview with 7Life, Joh gave an update on her husband’s progress—and we're relieved to share that there's a positive development!

She said, ‘He’s back, fighting fit, 100 per cent again', after a scary few weeks.

Speaking of the ordeal, Joh revealed, 'He had a skin cancer removed, and they didn’t get enough of the margins around it, so when he went back in, he managed to pick up a random infection, which is not uncommon in hospitals.'

Coping with health scares is challenging; yet, Joh sees a crucial silver lining in this experience.

'If anything, I think it was an apt time to remind people to go and get their skin checked.' she stated.

Breast checks and skin checks, dental appointments, and general health assessments form an integral part of our health maintenance routine.

But the disruption caused by COVID-19 has led to unanticipated leniency in ongoing schedules.

Joh, herself, someone acutely health-conscious given her sporting background, reiterated that even her family had slacked off during the pandemic.

Todd hadn't gone for a skin check throughout COVID, a fact that Joh used as a reminder to us all to make health checks a priority.

She shared, ‘We used to be so vigilant with skin checks because of my background in sport and with health—you didn’t want to miss anything. But we realised he hadn’t actually gone and had a skin check throughout the duration of COVID. So it was a chance to say to people, “Hey listen, put it back on your agenda and make it a priority”.’

As someone who spends much of her time under the Australian sun, both in her work life and outside, sun protection and regular skin checks have always been high on Joh's agenda.

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer globally and this latest scare has only reiterated the importance of being vigilant.

‘Having watched Todd have the basal cell carcinoma taken out of his face and ... older family members go through all sorts of experiences and ex-swimmers having melanomas ... it’s a really important thing.’ she said back in February.

Me too. Never sunbaked in my life, hate the beach
I did a lot of horse riding, explains my face and arms maybe, but I've also had many on my legs and they were always covered. So over it.

I have had two melanomas removed and other cancers and now checked every six months. Still have biopsies often but better to be safe than sorry. No slip slop slap when we were growing up in NZ unfortunately! I now use 50+ everyday of the year on any part of my skin exposed to the sun on my skin drs advise as it all accumulates.

My amazing husband has had countless BBCs removed, including a serious one earlier this year which has unfortunately cost him his right eye. He is halfway through 36 days of radiation. It’s a bit gruelling but you have to go with it. Fortunately Ted is a very optimistic person & is coping well. The oncologist told him he was born in the wrong country at the wrong time As the damage happened in childhood. Please make sure you grandchildren wear hats & sunscreen. We are so lucky to have amazing doctors in Launceston.
