Barilaro’s political advisor, Bridgette Joyce, smeared with unfounded rumours

“Social media has become a coward‘s palace where people can go on there, not say who they are, destroy people’s lives, and say the most foul and offensive things to people, and do so with impunity,’’ says Prime Minister Scott Morrison in the wake of nasty and fictitious rumours that Barnaby Joyce’s daughter was in a relationship with the outgoing NSW Nationals leader, John Barilaro.

At the young age of 23, Bridgette Joyce nabbed a position as senior political advisor to NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro in February this year. She did this just one year after graduating from university.

Since then, there were queries about how a woman at that age managed to land such a role within the political party.

But she has never been a stranger to politics. Her past work experience was with Mental Health Minister Bronnie Taylor, and she has always shown a spirited interest in setting her own foot inside the politics of Australia. Her father’s 16-year career readied her for the role.

The rumours started when the outgoing NSW Deputy Premier, 49, announced his unforeseen resignation on Monday. Trolls then threatened the 23-year-old’s career as they spread nasty rumours of an affair between the two.

In an interview with ABC Radio’s Patricia Karvelas, Mr. Joyce was quick to put out the sparks before the rumours spread like wildfire.

“My daughter is a strong person, and she had a completely malicious rumour, basically people saying that she had been in a relationship with John Barilaro and that’s why he left, which is just total and utter rubbish,” he said during the interview.

“'My daughter's got broad shoulders, she knows how to deal with this.”
