Banana bread crumpets? Woolies shoppers say this might taste like the ’80s

A beloved breakfast staple is about to get an unexpected twist—and it’s already causing a stir online.

Shoppers are buzzing over a mysterious new product set to arrive on supermarket shelves, but not everyone is convinced it’s a good idea.

Here’s what we know so far about the unusual item that’s dividing opinions before it’s even hit stores.

A new twist on a classic Aussie breakfast treat was poised to hit supermarket shelves—and shoppers had plenty to say about it.

Golden Bakery sparked curiosity after a sneak peek of their Banana Bread Flavoured Crumpets surfaced online, teasing a limited edition product that blended two pantry staples in an unexpected way.

Though official details remained scarce, food fans across the country were already busy speculating, debating, and planning how they’d enjoy this potential breakfast game-changer.

The buzz began when Melbourne food reviewer Nectro Vlangos shared a teaser clip to his social media.

The 17-second video, titled ‘New and Coming Soon to Woolworths’, briefly flashed an image of the new product—square-shaped crumpets labelled as banana bread flavoured and ‘made with real banana’. Since then, the internet hadn’t stopped talking.

Soon after, an inside source confirmed that the crumpets would be available in most Woolworths stores across Queensland and northern New South Wales starting 30 June.

But shoppers would need to act fast—the release was expected to be limited to just 12 weeks.

Still, despite mounting excitement, Golden remained tight-lipped. The brand’s own social media accounts had made no mention of the product, and attempts to reach them for comment were unsuccessful. The company’s silence only added to the mystery surrounding the launch.

That didn’t stop eager customers from sharing their thoughts. Underneath the original teaser, comments flowed thick and fast.

‘I don't even like crumpets but banana bread anything, count me in,’ one user wrote.

‘Keen for the crumpets,’ added another.

Elsewhere on social media, a simple post stating ‘Look what is coming to Woolworths’ triggered another wave of speculation. Fans quickly jumped in with breakfast suggestions that bordered on the gourmet.

‘This with butter and maple syrup will be next level!’ one person declared.

‘I'm imagining spreading with butter and cinnamon sugar,’ said another.

‘Pour some custard in the holes and air fry for a few minutes then drizzle with maple syrup,’ offered a third, painting a sweet and sticky picture of what could be.

Yet, not everyone was sold on the concept. Some raised concerns about how banana might clash with traditional savoury toppings.

‘I can't help but think these will taste like the 80s...When your sandwich got packed in the same lunchbox as your banana so everything tasted like banana,’ one reply joked.

‘Cannot put vegemite & cheese on banana crumpets, that ain't right,’ said another.

One shopper posed the question on many minds: ‘Does it taste like real bananas or does it have that yucky fake banana taste? I wouldn't mind trying it but depends what everyone else thinks.’

Golden Bakery’s parent company, George Weston Foods, had recently launched a broader campaign under the slogan ‘make every bite Golden’. Though focused on their classic crumpets, the message encouraged Australians to rethink how they used the humble snack.

‘Golden crumpets have always had a place at the table, and now we're giving people more reasons to bring them back, play with them, and make them their own,’ said Brett Grebert, the company’s marketing and innovations director.

Whether the banana bread crumpets became the next cult item or faded into crumpet curiosity remained to be seen—but one thing was clear: Golden had managed to get everyone talking.
