Bad news for those with a sweet tooth – is this farewell to our favourite lollies?

We don't know about you folks, but recently, we noticed that some of our favourite lolly treats have mysteriously vanished from supermarkets and store shelves… have you noticed it, too?
What is going on? Is this yet another result of inflation in action?
It seems like it wasn't only us who noticed – several users on social media also aired their concerns, saying that their favourite lollies are now nowhere to be found.
One of them is Nariman, who went on TikTok to ask if there was some kind of 'conspiracy' going on, saying she had been looking for Starburst lollies everywhere but couldn't find any.

'Can someone tell me where these lollies went,' Nariman asked her followers in a video she uploaded on her TikTok account. 'I've been looking everywhere in Sydney – Big W, Coles – these lollies don't exist.'
'Is there a conspiracy theory – did they just stop selling them and no one realised?' she asked.
After leaving hundreds of Aussies scratching their heads in the supermarkets, the confectionery company that makes the crowd-favourite finally responded and answered the inquiries on social media.
It wasn't a mistake that the shelves were empty, and there weren't any conspiracy theories or anything else, either. As it turns out, the company is just 'quietly ditching' the sweet treats. Here in Australia, at least.
The bad news was delivered by a representative of Mars Wrigley to a local news outlet.
'We regularly review our Mars Wrigley product range to ensure we're offering our consumers great tasting products that are also great value for money,' said the spokesperson.
'Our Starburst products are imported from Europe, and like many businesses that are importing products from overseas, the brand has been exposed to supply chain difficulties and rising cost pressures over the last two years.'
'After reviewing all options, we've made the difficult decision to discontinue the brand in Australia from June 2022.'
'As a proud Australian manufacturer for more than 60 years, we are taking this opportunity to prioritise and invest in the brands and products we make locally in Australia, such as M&Ms, Maltesers, Skittles, Snickers, Extra and Eclipse.'
Oh no! Well, that explains why we don't seem to be able to find them anywhere anymore… Other people on social media were just as baffled as we were about where all of the sweets went.
'Starburst is just gone… I've been looking for them too,' one user wrote in the comments section of Nariman's video. A second user agreed and added, 'I love those lollies, but they stopped selling them – like what, why?'
'I miss the lollipops the most,' said a third. 'No lollies compare to Starburst.'

Mars' factory in Ballarat, Victoria, is where many of its products are made. The Starburst product line featured several hit lollies, such as Chews, Babies, and Snakes, in addition to lollipops.
On the bright side, some users reported finding some remaining stock in their local IGA, indicating that while the company may be phasing out their Starburst range here in Australia, they have not yet completely vanished from the shelves!
So, members, we'll see you in the supermarkets, then? Happy lolly hunting!
