Authorities force fine-dining restaurant to close after several complaints

When we think of dining out, we anticipate a delightful experience filled with delicious food and joyous memories.

However, customers of a famous Chinese restaurant were shocked after their supposed celebratory banquet turned into a distressing ordeal.

The Eight, nestled in Sydney's Haymarket, carried exquisite yum cha in their menu and became a go-to spot for fresh seafood.

However, the restaurant's reputation recently went through scrutiny after diners reported falling sick following a Chinese New Year banquet last Wednesday.

The severity of the situation became apparent when a nine-month-old baby was rushed to The Children's Hospital at Westmead after repeatedly vomiting.

A 24-year-old man also rushed to the Prince of Wales Hospital emergency department after showing symptoms of food poisoning.

Other diners shared similar harrowing tales after spending $1,000 in the restaurant.

'I was just vomiting the entire night. I felt out of breath,' a woman shared in an interview.

'Actually, five of my other friends who dined there with us had the same symptoms as me.'

'I expected clean food. Definitely, that was not what we got,' she ended.

The distressing accounts continued as another customer revealed that her table of eight all became sick after indulging in a $1,300 feast.

She described suffering from muscle pain and gastro symptoms while her husband developed a fever.

The restaurant's Google reviews echoed similar complaints as other customers claimed that their dining experience led to food poisoning.

In response to these alarming reports, food safety and health officials forced The Eight to shut down and made way for a thorough investigation.

'We issued a prohibition order just to mitigate the risk of further cases,' Greg Vakaci, the NSW Food Authority's Compliance Director, stated.

Last year, the NSW Food Authority revealed a list of restaurants and eateries that breached their stringent food safety standards.

Fast food chains, hole-in-the-wall cafes and upscale establishments faced fines for violations such as food contamination, lack of cleanliness, and other compliance failures.

In line with the NSW Food Authority's inspection, The Eight informed diners of their temporary closure due to an 'unforeseen kitchen issue'.

However, they assured the public that they are working diligently to resolve the issue and will reopen once it is safe.

While The Eight prided itself on pushing the boundaries of traditional Chinese cuisine, the incident has cast a shadow over its commitment to quality and safety.
