Australian woman reveals AFFORDABLE and EFFECTIVE HACK for getting rid of fruit flies

Have you ever caught yourself getting frustrated over a swarm of fruit flies buzzing and being ever so bothersome around your kitchen? No matter what you seem to do or use, they just never seem to go away!

We’re sure you’ve all been there. If that is indeed the case, we have great news for you!

A Sydney woman revealed her affordable and "effective" hack for getting rid of fruit flies for good!

Talking to Yahoo Lifestyle, the Aussie woman admitted that she was getting furious over the swirling whirlwind of fruit flies that had infested her fruit bowl, leading her to try every trick she could find online, only for the flies to remain.

So, when she stumbled upon this trick, she was at her wits end and had to try it.
The woman said: “I realised I could use red wine when I left a glass out and came back in the morning and it had a bunch of flies in it.”

“I didn’t realise that wine would work so well – I’d tried traps with apple cider vinegar and dish soap before but it’s never worked as well as this."

So, what exactly is the hack?

The Sydney woman said that the first step is to fill a glass jar with water until it is 3/4 full.

Next, she added a few splashes of red wine and some dish soap.

Finally, she sealed the top of the jar with some plastic wrap before poking a few holes in it with a fork and securing it with a rubber band.

“The first time I tried, I didn’t get the water level high enough so the flies would fly in and then have enough room to fly out,” the woman said.

“It seems to work best when there’s only a little gap between the top of the water and the plastic wrap.”

She states that results have been absolutely fantastic, particularly when placing the jar right next to her fruit bowl.

Immense love for her hack came flooding in over social media, who had been caught in the same dilemma for far too long.

“I have had so many replies with people saying they're going to try it,” she said.

Meanwhile, Healthline advised people to troubleshoot the source of the fruit fly infestation first before opting into home remedies such as the aforementioned hack.

The group suggested checking the drain in the kitchen sink as this can house bugs and other pests.

They also encourage those who have failed to get rid of the bugs by using simple home remedies to phone an exterminator for expert aid.

I do have a great idea for fruit fly problems in the garden that works welll and will have to try and find it to share so bear with me for a day or two please. It involves a 2 litre milk bottle (plastic) with a couple of holes cut in it. Got your interest? Hope I can find it on my computer somewhere. Until then, don't hold your breath.

I just leave a glass with a quarter cup of wine vinegar in the kitchen & every morning I find dead flies inside

Cut two holes about size of 1 cent piece on opposite sides of bottle about 2/3 of the way up bottle. Ingredients: 2L of water/half cup sugar/1 tspn vanilla essence/2 tblspns cloudy ammonia. Mehtod: Mix ingredients thoroughly and pour 2 cups into the bottle. Screw the lid on tightly so the fumes of ammonia are trapped from rising out of the bottle. Application: As soon as trees are in bloom, hang 2 bottles in each fruit tree or among your tomato vines. If the sun can hit the bottles for part of the day, all the better. Replace the mixture after 2 weeks or when it becomes black with flies. This mixture also catches mosquitoes/blow flies/ house flies and coddling moth so can be hung on verandahs etc. if wanted. This recipe came from an orchardist and has saved our tomatoes for many years and those of friends we passed recipe on to. Good luck.

Where do you people live that you have fruit flies in such quantities? They’ve never been a problem where I live - east of Melbourne.

The further north up the Hume and around Shepparton to the left they are a problem. The Vic/NSW border always had fruit fly inspectors many years ago. Wangaratta/Wodonga/Albury have problems still.

Good idea to get rid of any fruit fly, just to mention although that the Drosophila that flies around the fruit bowl is not the same insect as destroys our fruit in the garden that is a Bactroceral, a really bad guy.

First of all let's get the terminology right. The little flies that frequent our fruit bowls, fruit scraps and wine bottles are NOT fruit flies. They are called Drosophila. The REAL fruit flies are Bactrocera which cause so much damage to fruit and are hard to eradicate. The Bactrocera are much larger and look very different to the little Drosophila.
