Australian drivers face potential risk with new car models

For many Australians, the Ram 1500 isn't just a vehicle; it symbolises rugged individualism and the ability to tackle our beautiful country's vast and varied landscapes.

However, for owners of certain 2023 to 2024 models, there's an important safety alert that you need to be aware of.

American Special Vehicles has issued a recall for 5,916 examples of the 2023 to 2024 Ram 1500 'DT' models.

This significant recall is due to a potential fault with the software in the vehicle's anti-lock braking system (ABS).

This fault could lead to a failure in the Electronic Stability Control (ESC), which is crucial for maintaining vehicle control, especially in adverse driving conditions.

The recall notice, officially lodged with the Department of Infrastructure, outlines the gravity of the situation:

'Due to a software issue with the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) may fail. This may result in a loss of vehicle control.'

The consequences of such a failure could be severe, increasing the risk of an accident that could injure or even kill vehicle occupants and other road users.

For those concerned about whether their vehicle is affected, a full list of vehicle identification numbers (VINs) for the 5,916 vehicles involved in the recall is available online.

American Special Vehicles advised owners to take immediate action if their vehicle is affected.

You should contact your local Ram dealer to have the anti-lock brake system control module software updated.

The good news is that this update will be carried out free of charge.

I don't understand the issue. It may be required for towing a caravan or boat? Perhaps a tradesperson who needs to access large constructions sites? Or just...why not? People with lots of children have people movers, maxi taxis, etc. Why such judgement?

I wonder how an overweight RAM would compare to something like a Suzuki Jimny in traversing the Simpson Desert.

The standard Suzuki Jimny weighs in at 1435 kgs while the RAM hits the scales at 2880 kgs, double that of the Jimny.

If you drove a RAM in soft sandy conditions, you would get that sinking feeling. Literally!

I know one family that has a people mover. In most late model cars three baby capsules /seats/booster seats or two of them and a reasonably big child / adult will not fit on the back seat of a standard car. Even in the early Commodores they are touching hard against each other and really close to the doors. Many drivers of them don't like the fact that they make it hard for people parking at Shopping Centres, seeing around them when reversing etc. and also on the open roads. Also most parking bays are too narrow for them. Another family I know has 4 children.

“American Special Vehicles”. That says it all. Those horrible monstrosities do not belong on Australian roads, Australian car parks….in fact, they do not belong in Australia.
Owners of these Rams love to tailgate

Doesn’t surprise me. Trying to be intimidating.
I have found that with thses tailgaiting arseholess, all you have too do is just touch your brake pedal and they back off very smartly, just press the pedal enough to activate the brake lighs, and thet literally shit themdelves. I also realise this action requires a little bit of practice, but very satisfying when perfected.

I do that quite often when being tailgated. Works with expensive vehicles most times. 😉

People movers and 4WD, the standard ones are okay, though some like to tailgate, but it is the Rams and the Chev 200 or whatever that are the biggest problem. The Holdens, Patrols, generally are okay, but today when driving from Forster to Ballina, some of the worst offenders seem to be mature people. A lot in just your normal 4WD I have cruise control on, someone passes, then I am constantly having to break, as they slow down, speed up, and so on. More modern vehicle than mine, so have cruise control. When one tries to pass, they speed up.
