The Australian couple’s DIY adult’s den with custom-made tiles

Home stylist, Sophie Bell, shared how she, along with her husband, built an outdoor bar and an amazing kid’s cubby house after going viral on TikTok. The couple built twoMediterranean-style cubby houses on their property, located behind Cabarita Beach, in the northeastern region of New South Wales.

Their creation consists of a wonderful mix of rendered white walls, custom tiles, arched doorways, a built-in bar for the adults, and a mini play and shop kitchen for the kid’s cubby (oh and did we mention the waterslide?)

Sophie, the owner of Peppa Hart design studio said she had been wanting to build a kid’s cubby and finally had the time to do it during the state’s last lockdown.

“I literally just hand drew a design on paper of how I imagined it looking and then my husband turned it into a real life structure…” she told FEMAIL.

“Once we started marking out the space we realised we would be out here 24/7 with the kids and we had nowhere to hang out while they were playing, so that's where the adults' cubby idea came about…”

“The adults' cubby is right next door so we can keep an eye on what they are up to but we can enjoy some spicy margaritas while the kids are living their best life.”

The pair were both equally as essential in the success of the project, with divided roles that played to their strengths. Ms Bell worked on the design while her hubby was in charge of the building process.

'Michael was adamant to make everything in there so he made the doors for the bar and handles as well,' Ms Bell said.

'(There are) a couple of speakers in the roof so we can have music playing, some beautiful light sconces on the outside that Michael made and rendered as well to complete the look.'

First, two concrete slabs were laid and Mr Bell constructed frames from timber and a strong polystyrene-like material, allowing the formation of the arched doorways and windows. Then, the frame was rendered and painted in white,be followed by the laying of ‘crazy pave’ or flagstone floors.

To top it all off, the talented Ms Bell single-handedly designed the tiles for the bar. Her custom-made tiles were made at a charming boutique tiler named Three Balls Red that will soon be available for others to purchase.

Sophie shared that her daughter loved playing ‘shops’ and pretending to sell them coffee and ice cream which then became the sole inspiration behind the kids’ cubby and the window inclusion that allowed her daughter to sell them things. The super mum also added a mini fridge and oven for her.

Her son, on the other hand, wanted something a little more extreme.

“My son wanted a slide so there are stairs on the side of the cubby that lead to a little sun deck that the kids can hang out on and come down the slide. The slide has water connected to it as well so it becomes a fun water slide, we pop a little inflatable pool at the bottom of the slide so they splash into the water.”

Ms Bell posted the now trending video on Tiktok to showcase their building process and end results, garnering a total of 1.9 million views. Thousands of users were taken aback by the couple’s next level DIY job.

“How does it feel to live my dream?” one user jokingly said.

“If my future husband can’t do this we will unfortunately be getting a divorce.” another said.
