Aussies are obsessing over this new travel destination—what's overtaken Japan?

As seasoned travellers, Australians have long had an affinity for exploring diverse cultures and landscapes.

Japan has traditionally been a favourite, with its unique blend of ancient traditions and cutting-edge modernity.

However, a new contender is capturing the hearts of Aussie adventurers.

South Korea is experiencing a surge in popularity among Australian tourists, and it's not hard to see why.

Over the last two decades, South Korea has made a significant impact on the global stage with its cultural exports.

From the infectious beats of K-pop to the gripping storylines of Korean dramas, the ‘Hallyu wave’ has made a splash that's reached our shores, influencing everything from our music playlists to our skincare routines.

But it's not just the pop culture phenomenon drawing Aussies in.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the number of Australians visiting South Korea has increased by a remarkable 28 per cent since 2019 pre-COVID figures.

Inside Asia Tours reported that South Korea represented 48 per cent of all bookings in 2024.

Nicole Newport, National Sales Manager for Inside Travel Group, attributed this rise in popularity to South Korea's unique cultural charm.

‘South Korea is increasingly becoming a hit among Aussies for its undeniably distinct cultural charm—and it’s only a matter of time before Hallyu, the so-called “Korean Wave”, sweeps the globe.’

‘It really is a land of contrasts—from ambitiously hi-tech to captivatingly traditional, offering cherry blossom viewing spots, majestic hiking trails and, of course, tantalising culinary offerings.’

The capital city, Seoul, is a particular drawcard with its vibrant nightlife, from hidden bars to quirky speakeasies, not to mention its passionate baseball scene.

And let's talk about the food—Korean cuisine has taken Australia by storm. Korean BBQ, or gogi gui (‘meat roast’), invites diners to gather around grills and cook their own meat, often accompanied by shots of Soju, a traditional Korean spirit.

‘But beyond Seoul, there is just so much to explore for the outdoor lovers and adventure seekers alike—there is absolutely something for everyone to enjoy,’ Newport added.

Andrew Stark, Global Managing Director of Flight Centre, isn't surprised by the growing interest in South Korea.

He highlighted Jeju Island as a must-visit, with its pristine beaches, waterfalls, volcanic cones, and lava tube caves.

‘Up to 70 per cent of South Korea is covered in stunning mountainous landscape, making it perfect for nature and thrill seekers alike with world-class hiking easy to reach from most cities,’ he said.

Stark said Flight Centre has noticed a trend in adventure travel, with people increasingly seeking experiences that push them out of their comfort zones.

‘More and more travellers are asking our experts to find them an experience that combines the best of both worlds, adventure and comfort, and South Korea certainly does just that,’ he said.
