Aussie woman shares 'genius' tip from a pilot that explains why turbulence is NOTHING to worry about

We've all been there – you're sitting on a plane, minding your own business, when all of a sudden, the plane starts shaking and you start to feel a bit queasy (we have to admit, we’ve even said our prayers a couple of times).

But don't worry, because as this Australian woman's TikTok video shows, there's no reason to be afraid of turbulence!

Using a cup of jelly and a balled-up piece of napkin, Anna Paul demonstrates why a plane won't fall out of the sky due to turbulence.

"Pretend this is the air that you're flying in, this jelly right here, and this napkin is the aeroplane - just trust me," the 23-year-old says.

Anna then pushes a sheet of a napkin into the middle of the jelly cup.

She continues: "That is you flying through the sky, there's pressure from the bottom, pressure from the top, from the sides, pressure coming from everywhere."

She explains that there's so much air pressure coming from every direction that it's as if the plane is flying in jelly. So when the plane starts shaking, it's just like the jelly is shaking too.

"When you're on a plane and you feel turbulence just imagine yourself in jelly like this and know that it can't just fall - you're stuck in the middle of the air because of all the pressure everywhere," she says.

She also encourages those people who are afraid of flying not to feel scared if they experience turbulence the next time they travel because the air pressure from all sides will prevent the plane from falling.

"And there's never been a plane crash from turbulence, so you do not have to be scared," Anna adds.

The 23-year-old's post has gained traction on TikTok, amassing a whopping 19.3 million views and over 4 million likes.

Several users expressed their gratitude to Anna, claiming that the factual video helped them calm down with their upcoming flights.

One user wrote: "This genuinely has helped me SO much."

"Flying from Bali to Sydney in six hours. Nearly went to the pharmacy for a Valium to help me. Thank you," another added.

A third chimed in: "Another pilot told me it's comparable to a pothole or bump in the road when you're driving!!"

So next time you're feeling a bit anxious during turbulence, just remember that there's no reason to be afraid. After all, as this video shows, it's just like the plane is shaking in jelly!

Do you remember the first time you experienced turbulence while flying? Here at the SDC, one of the team (not mentioning any names…) said that the first time he experienced air turbulence, he held on to his seat with white knuckles and, with stomach churning as the plane shook. How about you? Do you have similar stories?

Is the jelly analogy not cutting the mustard for you? Here's another explanation on why turbulence is nothing to worry about:

I am absolutely terrified of flying and no amount of reassurance or logical reasoning helps. I know it's irrational. I seem to have become worse as I've got older. I haven't flown for about 12 years, and had to be heavily sedated, otherwise I sit rigid with fear and can't breathe! And with Covid still around, the thought of flying is even less appealing! Happy to save my money, avoid the queues and delays and travel locally!
