Aussie teens go to 'extreme lengths' to dodge airline's extra luggage fees

Many of us here are passionate travellers, and undoubtedly, we have a wealth of travel experiences and stories to share. The thrill of spontaneous bookings or the inconveniences that gave rise to unforgettable holiday anecdotes? Absolutely priceless.

And in more recent times, with low-cost airlines becoming extremely popular, there's a whole new dimension to the tales – tricky luggage policies!

Two Aussie teenagers, Adriana Ocampo and Emily Altamura, both 19-year-old university students, definitely gave us a story to think about when they went to extreme lengths to dodge the extra luggage fees on their Jetstar flight back home from a girls' weekend away in Melbourne.

For those who have travelled with low-cost carriers, we're all too familiar with the strict baggage allowances they enforce. In the case of Jetstar, their carry-on luggage limit is 7 kilos per bag.

However, Adriana and Emily found themselves in a dilemma when their baggage weighed almost double that.

Desperate to avoid the hefty $65 fee, the duo decided to get creative. They opened their suitcases right there in the airport terminal and embarked on a mission to wear as many layers of clothing as possible — all in hopes that the weight of their luggage would pass Jetstar's requirements.

On social media, the video of their ordeal, which was captioned: 'Little did we know what was coming for us,' showed the two women rummaging through their suitcases and putting on a truly outrageous number of layers. Among the hoard of clothing, Ms Ocampo managed to wear 15 garments.

To add to the eccentricity, they even stuffed an iPad into her pant pockets. All their efforts attracted strange looks from fellow travellers, but they were thoroughly entertained by the situation.

Unfortunately, despite breaking a sweat and looking as if they'd participated in a who-can-wear-the-most-clothing competition, their elaborate plan was in vain. Ms Ocampo's suitcase still weighed 5.5 kilos over the limit.

The video ended with Ms Ocampo perspiring on the plane throughout their 80-minute flight home, only to admit defeat in the end – they had to pay the extra fee after all.

The teens' travel troubles didn't just stop there. They revealed that their flight had also been cancelled earlier, adding to their nightmare airport experience.

'We thought the only way we can take the weight off our bags is if we put it on ourselves, so we started putting on our jackets and coats, but we were still over the limit,' Ms Ocampo later shared with a news outlet. 'We went over again and were the only people at the gate.'

The two young ladies did see the funny side of it all, despite their wallets taking a hit. Even though other passengers might have been annoyed at the delay the pair caused.

Jetstar commented on the video, highlighting the importance of adhering to baggage rules for everyone's safety and fairness.

'While we certainly see the funny side, we have limits to carry-on to make it fair for everyone,' an airline spokeswoman said. 'Keeping track of how much baggage passengers bring onboard means everyone has room for their belongings, and we're meeting our safety requirements.'

The video surely divided the internet, as many viewers even shared their tactics to avoid these fees, while some debated the airline's restrictions.

Key Takeaways

  • Two Aussie teens attempted to dodge overweight baggage fees by wearing multiple layers of clothing during a Jetstar flight from Melbourne to Adelaide.
  • The women piled on 15 garments, including an iPad in pant pockets, but ultimately had to pay the $65 fine as their luggage was still overweight.
  • Jetstar commented on the video, maintaining that baggage limits are in place for fairness and to meet safety requirements.

While these Aussie teens provided us with an amusing story, reminding us that it's often these small adventures that create unforgettable trips, it is crucial to emphasise the importance of adhering to rules, especially when it comes to travel safety.

Adhering to weight limits in an aeroplane is necessary for safety and operational reasons. Weight limits ensure optimal performance during different flight phases and help maintain the balance and stability of the aircraft.

Exceeding weight limits can negatively impact an aircraft's ability to take off, land, maintain proper speed and altitude, and manoeuvre effectively. It can also place undue stress on the aircraft's structure, potentially leading to structural damage or failure.

Also, in emergency situations, such as aborted takeoffs or emergency landings, an overweight aircraft may face increased challenges in stopping safely or manoeuvring effectively. Adhering to weight limits helps ensure that the aircraft can handle emergency procedures successfully.

How does paying an extra $65 help with the safety aspect of the flight? Also if the girls each weighed less than 60kg and somebody on the plane weighed 120kg, should the heavier person pay more to assist with the 'safety' of the plane? Will we see Jetstar start asking people for their weight due to 'safety' considerations?
On the other hand, there are always people who would abuse luggage limits, if there were no limits, (must always keep in mind the baggage handlers OH&S requirements), so the does need to be a penalty.

See, everyone goes to these cheap airlines and then get charged for buying things when they want to fly back. Is it really worth all that hassle of going through putting all those clothes on, you ended up paying anyway. I would rather be comfortable and have the option for the luggage should I need it.

Got to agree James.
This is like the airline equivalent of roadside speed cameras being there to save lives, not raise revenue.
Statements released by any company in situations like this equate to blah, blah, blah.

Just a question rr thr average weight that an airline applies to a ticketed passenger.aybe the 2 girls could have been below the average hence their luggage could have been accepted. Cheers Vassy

I couldn't stop laughing when I saw this last night and thought technically their luggage wasn't over weight and there is nothing stating how much you can or can't wear on a plain.
Is there a weight limit on how heavy a person can be on a plane.

Bless their little heats 💕 thank you girls for making me laugh
