Aussie discovers 'misplaced' silk dress for sale online after dry cleaner mix-up

Discovering that a treasured item has gone missing can be a distressing experience, particularly when it's a rare item that holds sentimental value.

But imagine the shock and disbelief when that 'lost' item turns up for sale on the internet.

This is precisely the bewildering situation one Australian woman found herself in, leading her to suspect her dry cleaner of foul play.

The woman, who chose to remain anonymous, shared her story of how her cherished silk dress, which she had only worn three times, vanished after she entrusted it to her local dry cleaner for a professional clean.

The dress wasn't just any garment; it was a unique piece she had purchased years ago and held dear to her heart.

The distress of losing something so special was immense, but what happened next turned her distress into outrage.

Days after the dry cleaner reported the dress as 'misplaced’, the woman stumbled upon an eBay listing that featured what appeared to be the exact same dress.

The listing was from a seller located in her city, offering the dress in the same size and described as being in excellent pre-owned condition.

The woman wrote: ‘Drycleaners "misplaced" my beautiful silk dress. I've now seen that same dress, [which was] discontinued in 2018, for sale on eBay.’

‘[The seller is] in my city, same size, priced for excellent pre-owned condition. Coincidence?’

The woman's instincts told her something was amiss, so she reached out to the seller, hoping for an innocent explanation.

However, the seller's response only raised more suspicions.

Upon being questioned, the seller hastily removed the listing, only to repost it under a different account.

This dodgy behaviour was a red flag, and the woman's suspicions deepened when she discovered she wasn't the only victim of such an incident.

A quick look at the dry cleaner's online reviews revealed a pattern of customers reporting missing items.

Feeling wronged and determined to uncover the truth, the woman considered reporting the dress as stolen.

She had attempted to engage with the seller, asking for the original purchase location and additional photos of the dress.

Instead of answers, she received evasion; the seller claimed to have no receipt, and soon after, the listing vanished.

When the dress resurfaced on eBay and the seller ignored further inquiries, it became clear that this was no innocent mix-up.

The community's reaction to the woman's ordeal was one of disgust and indignation. Many empathised with her situation and agreed that the seller's actions were suspicious.

One person said: ‘They wouldn't have removed the listing or blocked you if it was a genuine owner selling it.’

The advice from sympathisers ranged from confronting the dry cleaner directly to demanding a replacement or a full refund.

Some even suggested that the woman should take her story to the police, as the evidence pointed towards a potential theft.

This incident serves as a cautionary tale for all of us who rely on services like drycleaning for our cherished garments. It's a stark reminder to be vigilant about whom we trust with our valuables.

Moreover, it highlights the importance of conducting due diligence when choosing a service provider, including reading reviews and seeking recommendations from trusted sources.

Just me, but if that had been my dress and the dry cleaners couldn't find it I would have informed the business that I then assumed it had been stolen and I was going straight to the police to lodge a report. Reckon dress would have turned up pretty quick smart and if not then when it appeared online Police would have a stolen item report to act upon.
