The bold move sparked a lively debate online about whether it is ever too early to embrace festive cheer.
For him, it was less about timing and more about finding joy in a year he admitted had worn him down.
Matt Hey announced in a social media video that he was ready to call it quits on 2025.
'I'm not even kidding, I know it's September but I am putting the Christmas tree up... and none of you can stop me,' he said.
'Honestly I'm sick of this year, I'm done with it. Let's just put the Christmas tree up and call it a year. I would like to actually enjoy Christmas for as long as possible.'
He also made his feelings on Halloween crystal clear.
'To all of you, I don't wanna hear, "What about Halloween?" I f****** Halloween. Stuff Halloween,' he ranted.
'There I said it. Always have always will—hate Halloween. Boring, next.'
Matt told followers he planned to put up the tree that weekend, offering an open invitation for others to join him.
'So I'm putting the Christmas tree up this weekend. If you'd like to join me, you can and if you don't want to join me, bah humbug,' he said.
His video attracted more than 70,000 views, with many people admitting they supported his decision.
'You know what? I approve, Merry Christmas to you and your family,' one commented.
'I'm not mad about this,' another said.
Others shared similar sentiments, arguing that Christmas decorations deserved more than just a few weeks in the spotlight.
'I agree, it's a shame to only have a Christmas tree up for three weeks when it really does brighten your spirits and home,' one follower wrote.
'I wish every day was Christmas Day. I love the decorations and food. So I wholeheartedly approve of this,' another added.
Not everyone was on board though, with one pointing out: 'Matt, it is September.'
Matt quickly shot back: 'Not loving your energy here.'
Some shared deeply personal reasons for embracing an early celebration.
'I'll be joining you! My nan's favourite time of the year was Christmas and this Christmas she won't be here for the first time. Everyone's agreed to have a huge Christmas this year to honour her love for it,' one follower revealed.
Others confessed they had already put their trees up.
'I set my tree up last week because I just purchased it and was so excited,' one said.
'Hun I put our tree up in September every year. Go for it,' another commented.
In a follow-up video, Matt showcased the result of his early Christmas plans.
He was seen dancing around a fully decorated tree in his living room, captioning the clip: 'To anyone who thought I was joking.'
The video was watched more than 200,000 times, with viewers describing it as inspiring.
'OMG here's me wondering if October is too early—I'm feeling INSPIRED,' one wrote.
'A GREAT LIFE DECISION,' another said.
Many admitted they felt the urge to do the same.
'I'm ready to put mine up now I need a little magic to feel alive,' one said.
'You're inspiring me! Uhhh I'm seconds away from putting up my tree too,' another added.
'This is the greatest example of free will,' one declared.
While Halloween traditions are not deeply rooted in Australia, some parents explained they still decorated for their children.
'I put my tree up November 1 every year only because the kids love Halloween so we do Halloween for October,' one parent wrote.
Another said they dedicated September and October to Halloween before turning to Christmas for November and December.
'I love Halloween so I've already decorated for that, but I fully support this energy,' one added.
