Arnott’s reveals the most popular biscuit of 2024—can you guess what?

When it comes to snacks, Aussies know what they love. But which treat took the crown as the most popular in 2024?

You might think you know, but the answer will surprise you.

Keep reading to find out which snack stole the show this year.

In 2024, Arnott’s continued to delight biscuit lovers, selling over 300 million packets throughout the year.

With a wide variety of choices, the brand kept tabs on which biscuits were leading the sales charts, and it was no surprise when Tim Tam Original claimed the top spot as the most popular.

However, the iconic Tim Tam sparked a wave of frustration when it came to its price tag.

In September, a packet of Tim Tams, priced at $6, drew sharp criticism, with some labelling the cost as ‘un-Australian’.

A spokesperson from Arnott’s explained, ‘Like most Australian manufacturers, we are experiencing a significant increase in our input costs, including the surging price of cocoa. This has led us to make the difficult decision to increase the price of our Tim Tam biscuits.’

The spokesperson added, ‘We continue to invest in promotional programs with our retailers year-round, to ensure consumers can buy our products at great value prices.’

‘The changes are necessary for Arnott’s to remain competitive as an Australian manufacturer and to continue to make the delicious products Australians know and love.’

The price point wasn't the only factor to rile consumers; it also came to light that Tim Tams were being sold at a cheaper rate in the UK, despite being made in Australia.

Tim Tams were the sole sweet biscuit in the top five. Following them were savoury favourites: Barbecue Shapes, Chicken Crimpy Shapes, Pizza Shapes, and Jatz. Tim Tam Double Coat made a notable jump, moving up two places from 2023 to land at sixth.

The remainder of the top ten included classics like Salada Original, Mint Slice, Scotch Finger, and Monte Carlo.

Over 13.4 million packets of Barbecue Shapes were sold in 2024, making them the second most popular item. Additionally, gluten-free biscuits saw a significant rise in popularity, with over 5.5 million packets sold.

Ranita Cowled, Arnott’s Business Director for Treating, shared, ‘There’s nothing like a fresh bikkie debate to start the week and everyone hoping their favourites will make the top 10.’

‘Whether it be our iconic bikkies like Monte Carlo and Scotch Finger, or crowd favourites Jatz and Barbecue Shapes, it’s clear Aussies love a mix of classic, sweet, and savoury in 2024.’

She concluded, ‘It’s fitting to see that as we close out the 60th birthday year for Tim Tam that the Original flavour has taken out the coveted #1 spot!’

Arnott’s range boasted more than 130 types of biscuits and crackers, with the oldest still available including Milk Arrowroot, Arnott’s Water Crackers, SAO, Ice VoVo, and Scotch Finger.

The year proved that while Australians have their beloved favourites, they’re always keen for a bikkie debate.

Arnotts said ‘We continue to invest in promotional programs with our retailers year-round, to ensure consumers can buy our products at great value prices.’

Would it not be more reasonable for Arnotts to offer a better medium price year-round rather than upsetting its very loyal customers by increasing the costs for short periods here and there? The supermarkets still maintain the same profits, and Arnotts has enough bargaining power with the supermarket buyers to say no to promotions.

I have not bought Arnott's biscuits since 2019 when they became non Australian. They are owned by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Company, a New York based company who, in turn, bought Arnott's from the Campbell Soup Company, another US based company.

The article and most people here are neglecting that Arnotts deserted Australia years ago for cheaper premises in New Zealand! so they can't really name themselves an Australian company any more! Yes I eat Arnotts biscuits, but I'll never think of them as Australian again.
Likewise Heinz.... now in NZ where they can source Chinese ingredients without having to declare where the contents are from on the can!
