Are you driving in this Australian state soon? These new road cameras can hit your wallet hard!

Navigating the roads of New Australia can be a challenge, especially on inter-state travels.

Each state has its own set of rules, and this time, it's getting more challenging for motorists planning to visit this one state.

The NSW Government is gearing up to enforce average speed camera fines across two major highways.

The installation of these cameras could have a significant impact on Australians' driving habits—and potentially, even finances.

Average speed cameras, also known as point-to-point cameras, calculate a vehicle's average speed over a set distance.

These are different from road cameras that snap a photo of a speeding vehicle at a single point.

This method should be a more accurate reflection of a driver's adherence to speed limits.

NSW has had 31 active average speed zones since 2010 but has only kept an eye on heavy vehicles.

Starting 1 May, that could all change thanks to the state government's trial.

All motorists should then be under the watchful gaze of these cameras.

The trial will take place along a 15 km stretch of the Pacific Highway between Kew and Port Macquarie and a 16km section of the Hume Highway between Gundagai and Coolac.

Throughout the trial period, drivers who exceed the speed limit by 30 km/h or less will receive warnings instead of fines.

However, those caught travelling more than 30 km/h over the limit could face hefty fines.

Come 1 July 2025, all speeding offences for all vehicle types will be enforced in these two zones.

The trial should run until 30 June 2026, after which the government will report back to Parliament on the outcomes.

The penalties for speeding in NSW are nothing to scoff at.

Motorists who break the speed limit by 31 km/h to 44 km/h should receive a fine of $1097 and five demerit points.

Go over 45 km/h and the fine jumps to $2959—including six demerit points and an immediate six-month licence suspension.

This move should align NSW with other states and the Australian Capital Territory, where average speed cameras already fine all types of vehicles.

The decision to implement these changes came after six recorded fatalities on the stretches mentioned above between 2018 and 2022.

With regional NSW accounting for two-thirds of all road deaths, despite being home to only a third of the population, the government has been keen to test the impact these cameras could have on road safety.

The National Roads and Motorists' Association (NRMA), Australia's largest motoring club, would involve itself in assessing the trial to ensure drivers' perspectives are considered.

The state government also planned to release a comprehensive communications strategy to inform the public about the trial.

So, if you're driving through NSW anytime soon, it's time to be extra vigilant about your speed.

Not only could it save lives, but it could also save you from hefty fines.
