Are you at risk? 'Serious' gas fire threat prompts popular Adria caravan recall

Safety should always be our priority on the road, especially when travelling with our families and friends.

A recall notice issued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has raised concerns among caravan enthusiasts, particularly those who own an Adria-brand towable caravan.

Adria, a brand renowned for its quality and popularity both in Australia and overseas, has been manufacturing 'top-of-the-range vehicles for almost 60 years'.

Outside of Australia, the brand has also gained the reputation of being the 'best-selling recreational vehicle brand across Europe'.

However, a recall that was issued on Friday affects all Adria caravans manufactured between early 2021 and October 2023.

The ACCC's recall notice revealed that the fire risk stems from an excess of sealant used in refrigerator vents located close to the gas burner in the affected caravans.

This excess sealant, if ignited, could start a fire within the caravan, posing a risk of serious injury from burns and/or significant property damage.

The exact number of caravans impacted by the recall remains unclear, with seven separate models being affected.

The ACCC has advised owners of the affected caravans to stop using the gas burner immediately.

They further recommend isolating the gas supply to the burner and contacting the supplier, AMH Products Pty Ltd, to arrange for the fridge to be repaired.

You may contact them through email at [email protected] or by phone on 1800 497 017.

If you own a caravan, it's essential to stay informed about any recalls that may affect your vehicle. You can do this by regularly checking the ACCC's Product Safety Australia website for updates.

In addition to staying informed about recalls, there are several other steps you can take to ensure your caravan is safe:
  • Regularly service your caravan: Caravans need regular servicing to keep them in good working order. This includes checking the brakes, tyres, lights, and gas and electrical systems regularly.
  • Check your caravan's weight: Overloading your caravan can make it unstable and increase the risk of an accident.
  • Install a smoke alarm and fire extinguisher: A smoke alarm can alert you to a fire in your caravan, while a fire extinguisher can help you put out a small fire before it gets out of control.
  • Practice safe towing: Towing a caravan requires skill and experience. If you're new to caravanning, consider taking a towing course to learn how to safely tow your caravan.
Remember, safety should always be your top priority when caravanning.

And where are the other comments? It would be pointless for me to say something that's already been said!

Its always amazed me that caravans only have 1 exit point. In heavy industry if you work in a location with only 1 exit, a confined space permit is required, and yet some people live for weeks if not years with that hazard in a caravan.
