Are you already planning your Christmas feast? Here’s how much it will cost this year

It’s almost the season of good cheer, love, and plenty of merry snacks and meals! But even though there’s much to celebrate in the Christmas spirit, there’s no denying that many people are feeling the pinch in their wallets this year.

If you’ve been extra frugal with your budgeting, don’t worry; here’s a list of the prices of the essentials to help take the stress out of your festive feast planning.

If you’ve been debating whether to purchase a ham this year or hold off on the prawns, read on to find out how much you can expect to shell out at the till for the popular items of your Christmas feast.

Ham

Coles:
The Coles Christmas Beechwood Smoked Half Leg Ham product is offered at a competitive price of $8 per kilo. They’ve restocked plenty in preparation for Christmas. But if you want to spread the cost of your Christmas lunch, you can always buy the ham early and freeze it in the weeks ahead.

Woolworths: Matched Coles with same price point, with their Woolworths Half Leg Ham selling for $8 a kilo.

ALDI: ALDI hasn’t stocked Christmas hams yet, though they usually roll out their Christmas products closer to the big day.

IGA: Bone in Naturally Smoked Ham at IGA has also been price-matched to meet Coles' and Woolies' $8 per kilo deal.

Prawns

Coles:
The most affordable offering at Coles is the raw Banana Prawns at $20 a kilo, much less than their cooked varieties.

On their website, Coles also offer Deli Thawed Australian MSC Raw Banana Prawns which retails for $14 per kilo. So, that’s between now and December to perfect your prawn cooking skills!

Woolworths: Offering their thawed, raw Banana Prawns for even less, at $15 per kilo. A reminder that if you’re looking to keep the price per kilo low, you’ll need to consider uncooked, raw prawns.

ALDI: Being that it’s November, ALDI doesn't have any prawns on offer aside from their frozen varieties. Their Ocean Royale Cooked Peeled Prawn Cutlets come in at $11.99 per 500 grams. But the prawns here have been peeled and prepared.

IGA: Offers an affordable and convenient option with pre-prepped prawns, Global Seafoods Prawn Ring (255 grams for $13), which is a great choice if you want to include prawns, but aren't having them as the star of the meal.

Pudding

Coles:
They offer the Coles Christmas Pudding Large, 700g, selling for $5.50, and these can be served as a dessert on Christmas day.

Woolworths: Also selling their Classic Plum Pudding 700g for Christmas at $5.50, so if you get a pudding from every supermarket, you’ll have a vibrant festive display.

ALDI: Offers their Kringle and Co Plum pudding for Christmas for just $5.29.

IGA: Their Signature Collection Six-month Matured Christmas Pudding is $9.50 for their 400 gram or $15.00 for their 800 gram.

Mince Pies

Coles:
Christmas Fruit Mince Pies are available for just $3.50 in a six-pack—perfect for a festive treat display and even make for a great hostess gift.

Woolworths: Woolworths Shortcrust Fruit Mince Pies are also at the same price point, at $3.50.

ALDI: Their Kringle and Co Fruit Mince Pies cost $3.39 for a pack of six—more expensive than last year’s $2.69, but still the most affordable among the supermarkets.

IGA: Community Co Mince Pies are coming in at $6.50 per pack, which look infinitely more inviting as a festive treat.

It’s always a great idea to compare the prices of the different varieties on offer to budget your Christmas feast properly so you’re not caught unawares by overspending.
