Are pink kneecaps the next big thing in beauty? Experts weigh in

A strange new beauty trend is making waves in Asia, leaving many questioning how far some are willing to go for a youthful appearance.

What started as a curious request quickly turned into a viral sensation, drawing attention from thousands.

The latest procedure promises to defy age—but does it go too far?

A bizarre new beauty trend has taken Asia by storm, with one Thai clinic receiving an overwhelming number of inquiries.

Tik Ka Au, a beauty clinic in Bangkok, began offering an unusual procedure—tattooing bright pink circles onto clients' kneecaps.

After posting footage on social media, the clinic quickly gained attention, with over 500 messages arriving daily from people curious about the treatment.

‘One of my regular [customers] came back from Vietnam and asked me to tattoo her kneecaps pink,’ said Tik.

‘I was curious, so I did some research, tested the techniques on friends, and eventually found the right procedure.’

The procedure, which costs 4,000 Baht ($186 AUD) per knee, can be done on other body parts too.

Unlike traditional tattoos, the ink fades over time, which has surprised many of Tik's customers.

‘I get more than 500 messages a day in my inbox from people asking about the service,’ Tik added.

Tik’s clinic also offers a range of other unusual tattoo services, such as on the scalp, elbows, armpits, heels, and even genital areas.

Clients flocked to Tik’s social media page to see videos of women getting pink eyeliner tattoos and face contouring, with the clinic’s follower count nearing 200,000.

The trend of maintaining a youthful appearance through cosmetic procedures is nothing new in Asia.

In fact, pale skin with pink undertones has long been considered the beauty ideal, stretching back to the Geishas of Japan.

A fair complexion is often associated with wealth and social status, while a darker skin tone has historically been linked to working in fields under the harsh sun.

This societal preference for lighter skin has sparked controversy, particularly with products like skin-whitening pills, which sparked backlash in 2016.

In Bangkok, many locals shield themselves from the sun with umbrellas or long sleeves, even during the hottest months.

Thai skincare brand Seoul Secret faced outrage over its campaign for skin-whitening pills with the slogan ‘white makes you win,’ which many saw as racist.

Despite such criticism, the global skin lightening market continues to grow, with predictions of reaching $16.42 billion USD by 2032.

The pink kneecap tattoo trend shows no sign of slowing down, with Tik's social media page gathering hundreds of thousands of intrigued followers.

As consumers search for new ways to enhance their youthful appearance, it’s clear this trend is one of the many anti-ageing techniques taking Asia by storm.
