Are parking fees for large cars about to skyrocket? You won't believe the reason why

A controversial proposal is sparking heated debate over parking fees for large cars and SUVs.

While some see it as a necessary step for the environment and public safety, others are calling it an unfair money grab.

The discussion is about to heat up—here’s what you need to know.

A new proposal to hike parking fees for large cars and SUVs in Sydney’s CBD has stirred up significant controversy.

The plan, which would see the current $8.20 per hour rate for parking jump to $24.60 for owners of SUVs and oversized vehicles like the RAM, has left drivers fuming.

Greens Councillor Michael Thompson, the brain behind the push, believes the changes would reduce carbon emissions and improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians.

Thompson pointed out that ‘SUVs and luxury trucks are eight times more likely to kill a child in a collision’.

However, the proposal has not been well received by all.

One Sydney driver asked: ‘Why? Parking is parking,’ expressing confusion over the rationale behind the plan.

Another criticised the proposal as ‘a rort’ and ‘a bit of a money grab’.

Despite the backlash, Thompson remained firm, stating: ‘We want these dangerous giant cars off our city streets’.

Sales data revealed that 60 per cent of new cars purchased in Australia are now SUVs, with models like the Toyota RAV4, Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux, Prado, and Mitsubishi Outlander leading the pack.

There would be exemptions for certain vehicles under the proposal, including those used for work or those with wheelchair access.

The same measure was introduced in Paris last year, resulting in the freeing up of 10,000 parking spots in the French capital.

While Paris embraced the change, many Australians, including some Sydneysiders, disagreed with the idea.

One woman said she could ‘see their point’ but added, ‘it should be the same for everyone’.

Others, like one man, suggested that a ‘maybe some other strategy to apply-maybe some other fuel tax, I don’t know, but I know that’s not the right thing’.

Transport Minister John Graham weighed in, urging the City of Sydney council to consider the financial pressure on residents before approving the increase.

The proposal was set to be discussed at a council meeting on 7 April.

The issue has raised important questions about the balance between environmental policy and the financial impact on drivers.

In a previous story, we discussed the financial pitfalls of parking in the city.

Apart from that they are not causing an accident while parked. It is while on the road and whilst I agree that many of the drivers behind these large vehicles are absolute maniacs on the roadbit is definitely not all. But the overall weight of their vehicle and size added to the speed does alot more damage on impact than smaller cars. And with so many larger vehicles now on the roads it does impact overall visibility around and ahead.
I suggest you do some homework as to the weight of vehicles as a EV, although looking small to mid size vehicle, weighs over 2tonnes !

There should be separate areas for large vehicles to park. I am fed up parking and coming back to find SUVs or people movers on both sides of me. Have to take life in hands moving out of parking space as impossible to see if anything coming along the straight!!!!
Agree some are so big you have to pull right out to see what's coming

What about people who have people movers because it is impossible to fit 3 items of child safety equipment of any type? Yes, the width is the issue. Thankfully most have rear seat area sliding doors. You can barely fit 3 in a very old model Commodore jammed in against each other and almost touching doors
Another issue can be people travelling with caravans who want to at least be able to buy groceries. If they leave the caravan elsewhere it is likely to be stolen - it certainly wouldn't be the first one - the same applies to trailers. You will be extremely lucky to find a legal parking spot near a shopping centre.

I agree and so many times I’ve been abused and blasted with their horn when you’re half out when they come around the corner and are to impatient and haven’t the courtesy to let you out.

That's reall good discussion strategy, can't think of something? Call them a name. For all you know it may have been very early in the morning and the guy was only a couple of minutes. Crikey show some empathy. makes one wonder just how law abiding and caring these commentors are???

Can we have it here too. Quite often these large vehicles take up the whole parking space and only very small cars can park beside them. If already parked one returns to their car to find they can not open their door because they have a large car parked so close to or over the white line. One has to question why are there so many of these vehicles as I am sure they do not tow caravand or trailers and have never been off road.
These vehicles have been approved for sale in Australia, maybe the park spaces need to be widened. (No, I don't have one)

While the larger vehicles may cause inconvenience to others, is it right to charge the minimum hourly wage per hour of parking? Doesn't make sense to me. It would be better to enforce better planning requirements for said parking areas.

I have never been able to understand why there is such a demand for these massive luxurious four wheel drives. Can’t imagine what is so popular about them when they are not used for 4 wheel driving. Yes I think it’s ok to charge them more. They tear up roads and block everyone’s view creating congestion and frustration

Rickcb63....great comment, it would appear that we will soon be heading for other 'nanny-state' ideas created by a minority group who have nothing else to do but to find fault with something or just want to appear that they are doing something as they hold 'an office position in some Gov.capacity' and want to exercise some warped idea. I have a Landcruiser and I bought it because my mates and I do a lot of camping in National Parks, I also tow a van and/or my tinnie. As for parking in the city, would not even entertain driving one of those 'clown cars' that can hold up to '273 clowns in them' and are smaller than a Mini into the city. Public transport is the main solution of this type of problem. A lot of the 'new and established parking stations, in the city and outer areas I can't even go into due to the height restrictions now appearing as this allows for more levels to be built, which in turn allows more cars ie: more revenue. The main gripe I have is that this Council office boffin stated that this would 'improve emissions and safety for cyclists and foot traffic.' I am sorry to say that most of the vehicle/people interactions are mostly caused by the person. Crossing roads whilst talking on phones/texting/games etc., cyclists weaving in and out of traffic, entering the road lanes from footpaths, dodging crossing and paying little or no attention to the movement of traffic in their designated lanes. I worked a number of years at Chatswood,NSW, and that Command had the highest number of vehicle/people accidents in the whole of NSW. The statistical data showed that the person/cause of the accident was the human error factor. What next, all cars will be the same colour due to the Council only wanting 'green cars', these sort of 'ideas are mostly formulated in Dictorial/Communist countries, where the man in the street gives up his right to have a choice...we appear to be heading down a dangerous road when these sort of people are allowed to get away with these sort of ideas.... funny when you think about what has been appearing, or creeping into our lives... minority Gov's who can't govern in their own right and have to 'make deals' with smaller groups, the emergence of minority groups who manage to excert major influences on large groups however they appear to enhance only the minorities, more 'persons in public positions commiting criminal acts, not being held to account as a criminal but just being moved out of sight/into a hidey-hole, with all their benefits....As for environment issues, what is the truth of the matter... put 10 of these boffins into a room and they can't agree on a finite explanation or plan to address the problem.... so how can the public form an accurate opinion/plan, let alone any Minister, Council office holder, who are not experts as they have a large number of 'experts' in the background advising them, to make any comment of the matter. There is a TV show that has come back to 'free to air TV' and it is called, 'Yes Minister.' It is a British spoof show on how 'Governments operate in office.' It is very funny and the script still holds true to this day.... worth a watch.....Have a good day everyone.

Most countries gave a congestion tax jn city limits. Encourages the use of public transport. Would be good to have large parking stations around the perimeter They do t seem to use the brains they were born with
