Are Aussies in danger? Government issues stern warning to travellers after series of incidents abroad

Travelling to Paris, France, could be a dream come true for many Australians.

Its iconic landmarks, exquisite cuisine, and rich culture are definitely something for the books.

However, recent incidents cast a shadow over the excitement of visiting this world-renowned destination, particularly with the upcoming Olympics set to draw crowds worldwide.

Australians planning a trip to Paris, whether for the Olympics or leisure, were urged to exercise a high degree of caution due to several attacks targeting tourists.

The warning bells rang louder after two Channel Nine staff members were robbed and assaulted in Paris while covering the Games.

In a separate and more harrowing incident, an Australian woman was the victim of an alleged gang rape by a group of five men.

France's national terrorist alert is currently at its highest level, and the Australian government reminded travellers about the possible risks.

Smart Traveller warned of serious crimes such as:
  • Physical assault,
  • Sexual assault,
  • Muggings,
  • Snatching, and;
  • Passport theft.
Dr Milad Haghani, UNSW's Senior Lecturer of Public Safety and Disaster Risk, talked about the vulnerabilities tourists face, especially during large-scale events like the Olympics.

'Tourists, being unfamiliar with the local language and high-risk areas, are easy targets,' Dr Haghani said.

'They struggle with reporting crimes and navigating local systems after an incident, and criminals are aware of this.'

Dr Haghani also emphasised the importance of awareness and vigilance.

'Simple measures like avoiding travelling alone, keeping personal belongings secure, and staying in well-frequented areas can mitigate risks,' he said.

'Solo travellers are softer targets, so minimising solo travel, especially at night, and in less tourist-friendly areas is important.'

Paris currently grapples with various security issues, including the risk of terror attacks, due to an influx of tourists.

French authorities made arrests to counter-terror plots, yet the risk remains, especially with groups that have called for attacks on the Olympics.

Cybersecurity is another major concern, potentially interplaying with terror threats.

Interestingly, Parisian locals have a brewing anti-tourism sentiment, similar to those living in Barcelona, Spain, and Bali, Indonesia.

While there is no solid evidence of widespread and systemic anti-tourism sentiment, the surge in tourism due to the Olympics could stretch French security capacities to their limits.

Despite increased security, various issues could present significant challenges, and criminals could take advantage of the situation.

The recent attacks prompted Olympic team officials to brief athletes on the latest incidents.

Australian Chef de Mission Anna Meares expressed her concern and briefed team members on security and safety precautions.

Australian Olympians were warned against wearing their uniforms outside the Olympic Village following the alleged gang rape.

For those planning a trip to Paris—or abroad—anytime soon, it's crucial to stay informed and take proactive steps to ensure your safety.

Here are some tips to help you stay safe while enjoying your travels:
