Apple employee reveals the one thing you should stop doing with your iPhone to save battery

Managing your smartphone’s battery life can often feel like a delicate balancing act—especially when there’s so much conflicting advice floating around.

One common habit, widely believed to extend battery life, has recently come under scrutiny—and what some users have discovered might just change the way you use your phone altogether.

Here’s how a routine trip to the Apple store turned into a revelation that’s left tech users rethinking everything they thought they knew.

There’s a common belief that closing open apps on your iPhone helps preserve battery life, but it turns out this could be doing the opposite.

A viral social media video featuring a UK Apple customer opened up a discussion on this tech myth after he learned a surprising fact during a trip to the Apple store.

The man, who goes by @fordylipsync on social media, said in the clip that his “mind was blown” after an Apple technician explained the real impact of closing apps.

‘Every time you close your apps, it uses data and battery to open them up again,’ the social media user recalled in the video.

‘How am I only just finding this out?’

The video, which garnered nearly one million views, revealed that the customer learned the hard way that swiping away background apps can actually drain more battery.

This advice came as the poster was at the Apple store to get his device repaired.

‘A kind man there fixed it–a technician guy, brilliant,’ the user said.

When the customer asked why he shouldn’t close his apps, the technician explained that reopening them used more ‘power’ and ‘data’ than simply leaving them suspended in the background.

Instead of closing apps, the technician recommended leaving them in the background, where they essentially freeze and don’t consume much energy.

‘People think they’re doing stuff in the background, they’re not, they’re just sitting there. They freeze. Don’t close them,’ the social media user exclaimed.

The revelation shocked the social media user, especially since so many iPhone owners had suggested that closing apps would save battery.

In fact, the technician even said: ‘You can leave hundreds of apps open without an issue.’

This was a huge contrast to the widespread belief that closing apps would improve battery life.

The advice given by the technician was further supported by tech experts who confirmed the surprising truth.

James Ide, a TechRadar contributor, explained: ‘Closing iPhone apps is both cathartic and instinctively feels like the right thing to do if your battery’s in the red. But it doesn’t actually help your battery life, RAM (random-access memory) or CPU (central processing unit), and opening and reopening apps could even have a negative impact.’

Ide also noted that iOS was specifically designed to ensure that background apps don’t use up significant resources.

Even Apple itself has weighed in on the matter, advising users to ‘only close an app if it’s unresponsive.’

Back in 2016, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, clarified the issue when a user asked if quitting multitasking apps was necessary for battery life.

Federighi replied: ‘No and no,’ dispelling the myth once and for all.

With so many tech-savvy individuals offering conflicting advice on the best way to preserve battery life, this new information from Apple employees and experts has left many rethinking their phone habits.
