ALDI responds to ‘rewards program’ rumour after one customer discovered a new feature upon checking out

After one eagle-eyed shopper stumbled across an inconspicuous detail upon checking out at ALDI, rumours spread that the budget retailer is planning to launch a new loyalty program, similar to its biggest competitors Woolworths and Coles.

Coles FlyBuys and Woolworths Everyday Rewards allow shoppers to earn and collect points after every shop by simply scanning their loyalty cards with the help of barcode readers that are available when checking out.

So when the ALDI shopper spotted a new scanning device on EFTPOS machines in an NSW store, they couldn’t help but theorise that the supermarket is hopping on the loyalty program craze.

‘Looks like Aldi might be implementing some sort of rewards program. All the EFTPOS machines have scanners attached to them at Bass Hill, NSW,’ the customer shared to a well-known Facebook page. They also included a picture of the EFTPOS device located at the end of the ALDI checkout.

Much to several ALDI fans' dismay, the retail giant immediately debunked the rumour that circulated, confirming that the new reader was rolled out to scan barcodes on digital gift cards and not for any sort of loyalty program.

Even though ALDI doesn’t have an official rewards program, one shopper said that the retailer already has one in the form of cheaper prices every day.

‘They already have a “rewards program”, and it doesn't require any special scanner,’ the shopper commented.

‘[They offer] cheaper prices every time I shop, along with excellent products. I feel rewarded every time I shop, and will continue to come back.’

Another customer chimed: ‘ALDI's reward is lower prices permanently.’

The shoppers' claims about lower prices were recently proven true when a customer compared his grocery bills from ALDI to Coles and Woolworths.

While he discovered that his grocery bill at ALDI was indeed the cheapest when compared to other major supermarkets, he pointed out one little downside to shopping for the budget retailer… You may click here to read more about this story.

Loyalty programs are not given by the generous nature of the retailer, they have to be paid for by someone and that someone is us, the consumer. I would rather that there were no loyalty programs and cheaper prices. There is no such thing as a free lunch!;)

Aldi has proved time and time again there is no need for stupid cost increasing loyalty programmes.
